I ordered one with 2.20 journals and a set of their rods that way there is better bearing choices. I also decided to go with their 6.625 rods vs a 6.8 for more piston choices.

I messaged the guys at molnar. Told them I wanted a 4” stroke 3” main 2.25” Pontiac rod journal. They said they can make me one. I told them I would place a deposit in the new years and they said no problem. Said production scheduled to start in august

Look what arrived today!

Hopefully there’s a 4.00 in crankshaft on my doorstep before long.

If you get a chance weigh that crank and let us know what it weighs. Just curious of weight compared to Crower billet crank. Thanks

I can tell you with packaging it weighs 88 lbs. I'll try to get a weight on the bare crank when I take it to the machine shop.

So what is the difference between the Molnar crank and rods compared to what Butler offers? Scat or Eagle.

I ordered one because they offered a pontiac Rod journal/pin. Haven’t seen any like that. Now if I wanted I could use the set of max-a-lite A-beam tomahawk Rods I have that are 706 grams and build a nice 4” stroke combo in a 400 GTO block

One of the critical things you need to have your machine shop check…is check the crank for straightness.

It's kinda the "good, better, best" scenario IMO. Eagle= good if your willing to re-work some or all of the order. Scat= better but some minor re-work needs to be expected. Molnar= Every dimension +-.0001". Measure, wash and install on everything we have ever received from Tom Molnar. BTW, Butler supplies Molnar as well.

So put the crank in the block with only bearings for 1 and 5 and checking 2, 3, and 4 with a dial indicator does do that?

Checked many cranks for straightness; never did it the way you describe. We had an actual fixture that supported the crank on both ends while we sat a dial indicator on number three main journal. The fixture had roller bearings that allowed the crank to turn freely with minimal resistance.

Exactly how machine shops check them. Well the good machine shops.

Tom Molnar told me himself, if any Molnar rod or crank is out of spec in any way they will send a call tag and pick up the product on their dime and send you a new one.
Can not ask any more than that.

Initially quality control is good, but don’t take it for granted.

Troy,
It is great to know If we checkout their product and it is not right they stand behind it.

For some reason my experience has been the opposite on the Chinese stuff. The first set of Eagle rods we had in the shop were 100% failure. Couldn't use any of them. Sent them back, no issue. The next set had 2 in spec. 6 out of spec. Called and asked for a supply of dowels so we could take them apart, cut them, hone them and use them. Good experience for the students. They were pissed on the phone but after calming them down they sent a little cloth bag of dowels. This was 10-12 years ago. As time has gone along, the rods have been better and better but we check every one for size, out of round and taper. About 5% or so now still need some touch-up in the hone to really be right. They almost always measure small when there is an issue so very easy to fix. Haven't had to cut an eagle rod in several years because it was too big. Press fit small ends are particularly tight. There is just no way to install them as delivered. Often have .003"-.004" press fit. That's just too darn tight. You would have to heat the small end to bright blue to get a pin in. That;s not the right way to do it. We hone them to .0016-.0018 press. That works great. Different shops have different methods. Some even press in at room temp. I don't want to move any metal installing wrist pins. Been using Molnar products for 3 years now. Have not had to machine anything. Still check every part though.

The 4” stroke was a new product for them. They took preorders to justify the run/offering. That said I ordered 8/2/22 and received on 7/28/23. About 1 month sooner than the expected lead time.
