Default 10 Bolt 8.2 Rear OK for Street Use with 455?

I have been running a 10-bolt BOP axle in my car for a number of years. It was upgraded with an Auburn Pro Posi unit and Richmond 3.55 gears about 8-9 years back. Since then, I put a 455 in the car and a Tremec 5-speed. Car does not see any track time, just some hot rodding on the street and an occasional launch from a stop sign. I am upgrading the brakes and going to 10" tires this winter and just wondering, with limited traction, will this thing survive just fine? I know that there are a lot out there that say you need to go to a 12-bolt or a 9" but just wondering how many of these survive under the conditions as stated??? Thanks.

I think you will be fine on street tires. The real problems start if you hook it. Wouldn't do any 5k clutch drops, but why bother? W/the 455 I'm sure it will smoke them just fine by easing it out at 3k.

Some do, some don't.

Gettting traction will probably kill it.

I was thinking about looking for a 12-bolt but not sure what will be the same dimensions and what will bolt up in the stock location??? Thoughts?

Go easy on the clutch and use street tires and it should hold up fine. High RPM clutch drops and sticky tires will kill it quickly.

I think that A-body 12 bolts up to '67 will be the same width as your original rear. After that they're a little wider but only about 1/2" per side. Most common wheel/tire combos will still fit.

Your 10 bolt will be fine....If you do switch to a 12 bolt your anti sway bar will require mods....otherwise it should bolt in fine.....I have a 10 bolt in my Judge and have just put in a 455 and am not contemplating a change. I ran a 10 bolt in a 3600 lb GTO to 11.00 without any issues....

Actually, the rear is out of a 68...Still BOP. Is the magic year 1972 before all changes for the width and fit of a 12-bolt?

Get one of the 8.5 Olds/Buick 10-bolts, nearly as strong as a 12-bolt and they come with some better features. They bolt right in, at the most you'll need to shorten the driveshaft a tad and change the rear U-joint. It will be same width as your '68 BOP rear.

The stock 28-spline axles are true heavy-duty units and the stock posi is fine as long as you're not drag racing with slicks. The axles are also a tapered-bearing design that bolt-in, no C-clips like a 12-bolt has so no C-clip eliminator needed.

I have one in my Tempest with 3.42 gears, but I got a little spendy and upgraded to an Eaton posi and Moser 30-spline axles.

Here's nice one for sale, from the same fellow that did mine for me:

Just curious - what did these come out of? I have a wilwood rear disc brake setup for my BOP and wondering what is going to interchange with something like this?

They come out of the '71 -'72 Olds 442/Cutlass and Buick GS/Skylark.

I have a disc brake kit made for this rear, contact the guy who sold you your stuff or talk to Tobin at KORE3 who probably knows more about aftermarket brake kits than just about anyone: http://www.kore3.com/index.php

Well, I did some measurements on my rear axle and the Wilwood brakes will not fit. Axle flange measurements are way off.

I have 8.5 3.42's in both my cars. Great rear end and cheap to build. I've had good success locating the housings as well. Nobody wants 'em cause they are not a 12 bolt... I just picked up a spare for $50......

Me too, I picked up a 71-72 Cutlass 8.5 for $50 last year as my spare and got some freebie 3.23's just need a posi unit. Best Value/Strength ratio for sure and "looks" more correct too!

Racing on street tires, easying into the throttle isn't that hard on them. It's transbrakes and high RPM clutch drops hooking on slicks that would shatter one.. I successfully ran 11's with a 26 spline 7.5" rear before, just being careful and launching in gear off idle with footbrake 1.6 60's....

Never had any luck keeping an 8.2 rear together on cars running in the 12's-and these were all automatics!!! I've found that good traction generally means and end to the 8.2 rear!!!

Most of the GM guys are running an 8.5 or 12 bolt.
