Driver side mirror
I purchased an all original Tiger Gold 1965 GTO from the original owner a while back and just now getting the time to work on it. I just noticed today that it does not have a driver outside mirror and does not appear to ever had one on it. The paint on the car appears to be 100% original and never been wrecked. I looked behind the door skin where it would have been mounted and there were no holes that were filled. Has anyone ever heard of this? Thanks in advance

The mirror was an option, not standard equipment.
Looks like the original owner didn't check off that option on the order form. |

Do you still have the original pinstripes on the car? Could we see some pictures on the pinstipe if so?
The mirror was an option. |

x3 - was an option in 64 and 65
On a 65 GTO option 444 was the driver remote mirror = about $12 option 602 was the driver side manual mirror = about $4 If one wasn't ordered , nothing would be there. Do you have the original window sticker or PHS or Build Sheet ? |

outside mirror
Ok thanks guys I didn't realize that. All the GTO's I ever had have always had the outside mirror. I am posting some pictures of the pinstripes and yes I do have the PHS for it. It is an original Tiger Gold with black vinyl top 3x2 4 speed. I purchased it out of a second level of a barn in Ohio and had been sitting there sense the late 70's.

Looks like it has some rust isses?
Assuming it still retains the Original motor we would love to see pics of that engine bay from all angles! Thanks for sharing!

Yep - mine almost made it 50 years without one, too. Left and right are getting installed shortly to make driving on California freeways significantly easier.

What 60'sstuff said: PICS!!! My '65 has a date-coded manual side mirror, but it was put there later. It wasn't born with an outside mirror, or seatbelts, either. But with tripower and 4 speed, who needs that stuff anyway!!! LOL...........

I am posting some pics of the PHS and data plate. Yes it has the original motor and trans and all the accessories are original too. It does have some rust issues but not to bad. I need to replace the trunk floor and put on some lower quarter patch panels. It also has a little rust near the seat belt mounting points but otherwise looks pretty good.

Here are some pics of the motor. Note the XX on the firewall for the special paint code.

I am surprised PHS does not know what the code #2 paint is, but you do, and we all know now.

Like on the 65 Jolly Green Giant, etc .. If he had told them it was original paint gold and had 97904 on trim tag - they probably would have noted it was Tiger Gold |

Open Questions to all -
1. What does the O on the lower 1 group line of Fisher codes on Trim Tag designate ? W = Softray Windshield O = ? Jolly Green Giant was special paint, but no O on tag , so guess its not about special paint. 2. Code 592 Best i can find is it means special order - so seems it would go towards the special paint. But Keith Seymore's Black 65 GTO also has 592 - what is it on Seymore's GTO ? Also have buildsheet for 66 Tiger Gold #97904 - without code 592 listed (Pontiac Plant) Was it a different deal in 65 for Tiger Gold , than it was in 66 ? small oddities of significa/insignifica 65 GTO 2door Hardtop 06E 5 = body build date 2-2 = Special Order Tiger Gold (Ditzler-PPG #97904) / Black Vinyl Top 213-B = Black Buckets VIN = 237375P339249 46409 body sequence number 07- 654 Dealer Code = 07 Michigan Zone --- Dealer unknown Invoice Date 07/09/65 382 - GTO 392 - AM P-button radio 421 - Washer & 2spd Wipers 462 - Deluxe Hubcaps 471 - Back Up Lamps 524 - Wood Wheel 532 - SoftRay Windshield *592 - * Special Order * 601 - Console 624 - Deluxe Seatbelts - front 631 - Front Floormats 701 - Safe-T-track 71F - 3.55 Axle 72C / 73C - Redlines 744 - 4spd Synch V8 75W / 76S - WS 3x2 77W - Wide Ratio M20 4spd Trim Tag Accessory Codes WO 2LGP 5NW W = Tinted Windshield / O = 2 L = Manual floor shift / G = Console / P = Back Up Lamps 5 N = GTO / W = Deluxe Seatbelts w/ Retractors |

This is one COOL 65 GTO!
Great pics - THANK YOU - it still has the starter wire clip at bottom left valve cover bolt, fan caution decal, tower hose clamps and those rare firewall marks! Also the small curved tip aluminum fan indicating the 3.55 rear axle. Be super careful in preserving all the factory goodies on this car. Thanks for sharing such an important rare find!

If you notice the grease pencil marks are under the black out paint.
also, thought the heater hose's used spring clamps |

Relative to code 592 I've always interpreted that to be a "flag" that there is something unique about that particular vehicle order. Not necessarily special paint but in my case we surmised it might have to do with powertrain options, like the metallic brakes on the rear axle. It might also have to do with a vehicle order that requires special handling, like an expedited build or unique dealer location (surmised since it is grouped with the "Export" option in the same box). I thought the heater hoses used the "tower" clamps.
