Our Judge was a real "barn car" - sitting from 1982 to 1998, covered by lawn furniture, very much dis-assembled in every major segment. We hauled it home in buckets, barrels and the hulk itself on a car hauler - a total distance of 1 block!! This car had been sitting approx 400 feet from our house and I never knew it!! It has a numbers-matching 400 RA-III engine, 4-speed trans. with a non-original 3.73 12-bolt.
Previous owner had raced it back in 1980-81. Mickey & I spent 2 years putting it back together - our way. It's color is 1964 Pontiac "Nocturne Blue". We enjoy it!!

Back in approx 1979-80, I bought a 1969 Carousel Red Judge. It was one of the first 2000 built. It did NOT have the glovebox emblem when I bought it from its original owner for $600. It had a spun main bearing. The owner had purchased it for the sole purpose of racing "anyone, anywhere, anytime" in a rural Ohio county. He did just that, too. He said he got tired of replacing 4-speeds, so he converted the car to a TH400 tranny with a dual-gate his/hers shifter. That's how it was when I bought it. After repairing the engin

Our 1970 GTO "Judge" was a real "barn car" - sitting from 1982 until 1998, covered by lawn furniture, very much dis-assembled in every major segment. We hauled it home in buckets, barrels and the hulk itself on a car hauler - a total distance of 1 block!! Yep, this car had been sitting approx. 400 feet (by the crow) from our house and I never knew it!!

It has a numbers-matching 400 RA-III engine, 4-speed M21 transmission with a non-original 3.73 12-bolt rear end. The interior was restored to original except for seat panel inserts which are custom (read: soft, cool, velour-like medium blue). Overall, it underwent a "frame-on" restoration.

It's previous owner had raced it back in 1980-81. Mickey and I spent 2 years putting it back together - our way. Its color is 1964 Pontiac "Nocturne Blue". Per the PHS documentation, its early 1970 production status permit use of the 1969 striping kit. We felt that color/striping combination enhanced its appearance. We drive, use and enjoy this car!!

Next picture was taken at Summit Racing headquarters during their "Super Summit" event in 2000. Notice the 1970 GTO sitting next to the Judge. That's our 12.0 second "hot rod" which we also thoroughly enjoy. All its original parts are in storage, available if desired.

Back in approx. 1979 or 1980, I bought a 1969 Carousel Red Judge. It was one of the first 2000 built. It did NOT have the glovebox emblem when I bought it from its original owner for $600. He had spun a main bearing in the engine by overreving it. The owner had purchased if for the sole purpose of racing "anyone, anywhere, anytime" in a rural Ohio county. He did just that, too, a la The Dukes of Hazzard. He said he got tired of replacing 4-speeds, so he converted the transmission to a TH400 with a dual-gate his/hers shifter. That's how it was when I bought it. After repairing the engine and driving it a couple of summers, I sold it to my then-father_in_law in North Dakota for the princely sum of $600 and towed it halfway there. The ol' boy kept that car, driving it in parades and special occasions in Minot, ND - including their "North Dakota State Fair" parades for many years. I always had a soft spot for that car. It was my first contact with a REAL muscle car.

One of our fellow board members, Chad Dammen, sent me this photo of my old Judge. It was taken this past February at a car show in Minot, ND. The Judge still lives and (by now) is undergoing a frame-off restoration by the grandson and his father. It's still in their family. You don't suppose, now, that I'd be able to buy it back for $600 - do you????

http://home.neo.rr.com/jturrin/image...D-Feb22_09.JPG

Well, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!!!!

Got a PHS doc. carousel red w/ blk. interior. Pretty much bare bones though. 3.55 safe-t-track, RA III, 4-spd.,non-hideaways, rally gauges w/in dash tach, and AM radio. Pretty much like the one I owned 32 yrs. ago, just different color (Liberty Blue). Owned this one 1 year and it still gets my adrenalin flowing up like 32 yrs. ago.

Now that we are on to the color of Judges, does anybody know what the numbers/color breakdown was for 1970. How many Orbit Orange, how many Blue, how many White? etc...

Was the Polar White a more common color?

Don

I read somewhere that there were more Atol Blue ones than any other color, but how would you find out? It would be nice to know the color breakdown.

The only break down that is currently available is for the 1970 GTO's including the Judge. At present there isn't a breakdown of Judges only. The favorite color for the '70 GTO's was Atoll Blue (4,980) followed by Granada Gold (4,464) and Cardinal Red (3,777). The least favorite color was Orbit Orange (618).

DC - Your question is actually why I started this thread in the first place. I am trying to figure out how common or uncommon my Judge actually is. You just don't see as many Atoll Blue Judges as you should for the total 4,980 Atoll Blue GTO's produced in 1970. Here is my theory.....

When you look at the '69 Judge production you can tell that Pontiac wanted the Judge to stand out from the rest of the GTO line. Carousel Red was almost exclusively a Judge color in '69, just as Orbit Orange seems to be almost exclusively a '70 Judge color. Personally I have not seen very many Polar White standard GTO's (actually every one I've seen has been a Judge)so it leads me to believe that it too is primarily a Judge color.... Also, all of the pontiac ad's from 1970 seem to be of a Polar White Judge.

The general consensus is that Orbit Orange is the most popular color followed by Polar White and Cardinal Red. I have no actual proof to back this up,just years of talking to different people in the Pontiac community.

Glenn was nice enough to e-mail me the production vs. color breakdown for 1970.

Here it is

Starlight Black 1,515
Palomino Copper 1,457
Polar White 2,460
Bermuda Blue 1,861
Atoll Blue 4,980
Baja Gold 2,067
Palisade Green 2,487
Mint Turquoise 774
Pepper Green 3,661
Burgundy 1,246
Palladium Silver 2,394
Verdoro Green 3,299
Cardinal Red 3,777
Orbit Orange 618
Sierra Yellow 2,889
Granada Gold 4,664

I belive polor white is the most popular Judge color because all the advertising was done in polar white untill the orbit orange was introduced later in the 1970 model year as a Judge color only as for color seen more often then others it depends on what part of north amarica your in for instance I know of 2 orbtit orange 1 red 3 verdoro green 1 pepper green 1970 Judges all documented and 1 1970 Judge convert polor white documented all within 200 miles I have never seen a blue one and that would be my favorite color

R70

Good thoughts on the subject and thanks for the numbers.

I was trying to find out if the Polar White was one of the more rare colors, but to other's points, all the ads I have seen were the White, but all the other 70 Judges I have seen have been Orbit Orange. Mine is the first white one I have seen, which prompted my question.

I was not sure how it would look when finished, but the White is so white I can hardly look at it in the sun when I buffed out the fresh paint.

I also think the Blue is a really nice color, and I considered painting mine blue, but I did not want to change the original color and decrease the value of the car.

R 70 Judge, my friend owns a '70 Judge/Atoll Blue/automatic. Another guy around the Twin Cities has a '70 Judge/Atoll Blue/4-speed. I also think there is another '70 Judge/Atoll Blue/? transmission around and I know of 1 '70 Judge/Atoll Blue/automatic? that was too far gone and was pieced out.
