Going sequential fuel/spark efi
I've been thinking about it for a couple of years, finally gonna try it. I hope that I can get some ideas from those of you who have already done it. Looking for input on what others have done for the coil near plug arrangement. Specifically, did you buy new stuff? Junkyard coil set ups off of a particular vehicle? Any other general input is appreciated as well. If it matters, I will be using Megasquirt, Pro Ultimate. I don't NEED that much ecu, but at my age, this is probably my last time trying to take on learning major new (to me) technology. So I went with the buy once cry once philosophy. This thing will handle any crazy idea I could ever come up with... Any detailed write ups on picking parts (coils/injectors/sensors) that any of you know of would be great. Hoping to find something like the "power recipes" in the back of Jim Hands book. Or... "Sequential Fuel and Spark for Dummies" would probably be perfect for this situation...

I tried megasquirt and it is very capable but I switched to Holley hp and would recommend you look at the holley line due to the increase support. You will find that there is a lot of support online for megasquirt but none of it will directly apply, ie motorcycles, euro 4 cylinders. Just my 2 cents.

Holley is a very user friendly ECU from what I hear . Steve Morris racing seems to use them a lot and he only says good things about them...

Right or wrong Megasquirt is a done deal. Looking for info on what's good coil wise, sources (new or used) that some of you have used to procure the stuff. Creative cam signal solutions etc. I understand what's needed, but having it not be an eyesore would be better. I am feeling more comfortable with the information I'm finding on the injectors I have, so I think I'll probably use them. Have a crank trigger wheel on the way, and feel comfortable with what's involved with that. Thanks for any input. Even the Holley suggestions. I stuggled with it, but decided on the Megasquirt.

I think you'd be fine with any of the gm ls based coils, new or used. Lot of guys using high mileage stock stuff on some very high hp turbo builds. Think I remember reading that ls2 and/or SUV based coils are better than the older ls1 stuff.
I built a MS1 for my car 10 years ago and I love it. Great way to learn about efi. I added twin turbos last year and it runs the engine just fine so far. And I'm still only running batch fuel and HEI 7 ignition too. Where are you thinking about mounting the coils? On the valve covers, remote, or undecided? A wasted spark setup with 4 Ford style coils might look nice mounted to the firewall behind the engine. How much power are you looking to support? Last edited by adynes; 03-28-2018 at 11:15 AM. |

If I can make a really nice installation, I'll mount on the valve covers, if not, remote. I really want to have fully sequential spark, not wasted. I'll have enough features of this ecu that are unused, would seem a "waste" pardon the pun, to end up with wasted spark. Though anything is possible I guess.

Diyautotune sells some coils of their own design. They have a 4 tower coil that you could use 2 of. That would be a clean setup.

I did coil on plug sequential and sourced 2006 corvette coils on rockauto and the wires. Used bolts thru the valve covers to hold them down, use 2004 chevy truck wires, you can find them in 12.5" lengths. Also I would recommend a holley or fast dual sync so at for the cam sensor along with your crank trigger. You will have enough going on and this is worth not having a headache with cam position like i did

Yeah, the dual sync are handy. It makes an expensive cam sync though... But it is a viable option. I'm wondering if I could take a large cap HEI and clear out everything on the inside, mount a very small sprocket at the top of the shaft with only one tooth and shoot a hall sensor up mounted from under the base? Just thinking out loud... Cousin has a a digital printer, maybe a plastic lid to cover it. Idk...

I would think you could remove 7 of the 8 teeth from the VR pickup and that would work. Probably have to use a shielded wire to the ECU. Maybe condition the signal with HEI module itself.

I'm sure that would work, not sure if I could contain it all inside the cap area shooting radially though. I have an old HE I body I use for an oil pump primer, I'll have to dig it out and do some measuring.

I downloaded the manual. Looks like it can take either a VR input or a square wave input (0-5v or 0-12v) pg 18. Might be able to use the output from the 4 pin HEI module with a 1k pullup resistor.

I am running MegaSquirt, I like it, but I am a computer tech for my day job.
I have built 2 of them. I am only running batch fire on my turbo car, but I do have it controlling the HEI dist. for full timing control.

I hope it works out, I ended up chasing emi noise thru my hei module and decided to go another route
