I am putting back together a 66 GTO Conv that has been apart for 30 Years. I cleaned and blasted the exhaust manifolds and notice there isn't any heat riser. No shaft, spring no nothing. Looked thru all the parts 3 times. I Can't find it anywhere. IS IT REALLY NECESSARY??
I plan on making this a weekend only crusier, and will be in the garage in the winter. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks

When I bought my 66 GTO, it had the original engine & the whole car was pretty much original. Neither exhaust manifold had a heat riser/valve.

I hope you mean there are also no holes for the shaft either.

Pittsburgh,
What is the best way to block off the intake manifold heat? You said to use the 1-1/4" freeze plug----does this need any modification or will it fit right in? Please explain as best as you can. |

DEFINITELY DEFINITELY Block off the intake heat crossovers. its gonna be a good thing.
you don't wanna heat up yer intake anymore than necessary. you could get into fuel overheating problems. and mostly they aren't necessary in your situation. lose anything that will add additional heat. |

pittsburgh and R1,
Thanks for the info. I will take a look and measure. The heads are at the machine shop now but I will block them before they go back on. If I remember correctly I had them blocked by using a piece of steel in that fit in the hole of the gasket, but that was a long time ago and my memory is not what is used to be (if I remember right). |
