i just got a new CVR mini starter. i tried to put it on and it wont line up. the "gear" that comes out to turn the flywheel needs to come forward. not just a little bit either. somewhere around 5/16". anyone else have this problem ? this doesnt sound right to me at all. the motor is a 428. factory flywheel,converter....400 turbo tranny. any suggestions ? im thinking about getting the plate that holds/mounts the starter to the block trimmed down.

doesnt it kick out when you start it? on my powermaster it didnt line up all the way so the entire gear was in contact with the other one, this was when i pulled the gear out to align. idk if supposed to be this way but its working for now

I'm not familiar with a CVR mini starter, but usually you can seperate the mounting piece and rotate it every 90 degrees. It's called clocking it.

it has several ways to position the starter. i have it lined up to the one i want. the problem is when the starter is bolted to the block the gear that turns the starter needs to move forward (twards the flywheel) about 5/16". it looks like it would line up perfectly. i tried to pull the "gear" out and it will come out about 2" then it will go right back in. as it is being pulled out it is turning. is this normal ?

I have the CVR on my 400. It fit just fine. the gear is not supose to be in constant contact whit the flywheel. When you turn the key, the gear kicks out. I carfully pulled mine out with a screwdriver to check gear clearance after install. Are you sure you have the Pontiac starter. If you need I can check the part # for you.

I had the same problem with a Jegs mini
about ready to send it back and I started measuring.
It was hitting the ringgear of the new Pioneer flexplate when fully retracted, it needed about an 1/8th". I I measured from back of block to ringgear and then swapped the Pioneer for a factory flexplate and the measurement was a bout 3/16 more so I used the factory flex and the starter cleared by an 1/8th
JJE69, you may want to try another flexplate after you verify that starter is the right one.
2 problems: 1. flexplates can vary the location of the ring gear when they are welded on and 2. the starter guys try to make one starter fit a Pontiac and an Olds both.
BTW, my stock Delco starter fit either flexplate with no issues. It was only after trying the mini that I discovered the difference in flexplates. (quality control issue)

i thought it had to be like a factory starter ( constant contact with flywheel ) until i started to pull on the shaft that the "gear" isconnected to and found out it moves out. that made me wonder. with my luck it will still not line up right but here goes nothing. off to change a starter at 1 am. fun fun.

judge_jury_executioner_69, What type of factory starter runs in constant contact? I've never seen one.

The gear on a stock starter is not always in contact with the flywheel. It retracts back into the starter housing just like a mini starter does.

The only time a starter gear is should be in contact with the flywheel is when the ignition is initally engaged, thus starting the motor, once the key is released and goes to the "on" position the starter solinoid is no longer energized.

sorry that was at 1 am and i was in a bad mood. i ment it at least lines up to the flywheel. i didnt realize the mini starter has a shaft that goes out and comes into contact with the flywheel. it went on fine. sounds really loud.

Did you check to see if it needs any shims? if it's noisy, you might have a clearance problem, I 've got a CVR on my 66 Lemans, no problems so far!

try putting a shim or two in there and see if it sounds any better. I use a Tuff Stuff mini starter and it is the quietest starter I have ever had.

oh i had that damn thing on and off 3 or 4 times trying to get the right shims on there. then i hooked up the battery and for some reason the shaft came out with the key on accessory. and would stay out. now it just comes out when i try to turn it over. wierd.

Sounds like your ignition switch may be going bad, might be time for a new one!

mine didnt have a brass gear.but i scratched the hell out of the alum. mounting bracket on the flywheel. it sure beats holding up the heavy factory starter, trying to make sure the shims stay on the bolts, and trying to start them at the same time. i was doing this at 4 am with a flashlight. that adds to the fun.
