Is it possible to remove the clock on a '68 GTO from behind the dash, or does the face of the dash and instrument panel have to be disasembled somehow? This car has A/C and I've removed the ducts under the dash many times, but I wouldn't know how to take the dash apart. I have the GTO Restoration Guide, but that doesn't seem to explain removing/reinstalling a clock.

Also, if I can get the clock out, what recommendations are there for getting it repaired? I would like to keep the original movement and method of operation. I'm the original owner of this car and it's mostly original, including the paint. Thanks!

HI,
The 68 GTO clock comes out from the rear of the dash.
It is a close squeeze, but it will come out.
The clock used an electro magnet to wind the clock.
A set of points come togehter, energize the electro magnet causing it to turn. Most that I have found have the windings of the electro magnet byrned out and the plastic melted because the points stuck together. You can buy a quartz kit to fix your clock or you can send it off to have it repaired.
By the way, the faceplate for a 68 GTO clock is a different color than a 69 or 70 GTO.
I put a in-dash tach in its place in mine The cost was the same as getting mine restored with quartz movement.

I've "repaired" these clocks before. Repair came in the form of spraying lubricant on the works and voila--they work. I'd recommend a good silicon lubricant like you put in your door lock--not graphite. The clocks work by a winding mechanism. They load the spring by the electric circuit. When the points close making contact, a lever throws an arm back that winds the clock and it begins to count down until the points close again and the process starts over. Over time the works clog up and the points can stick and burn. I've simply cleaned them and they're fine. If your car isn't driven often, I'd recommend going the quartz replacement cause it will run a battery down and you have to reset the clock if you disconnect the battery.

Here is a picture of the back side of a 1969 Rally Clock.It has the brackets very simlar to the '68 style.You will probaly have to remove the radio and some of the A/C vent to reach up behind the dash to remove the clock.

Pulling the front seats can be a big help when working under the dash. When you remove the clock.
