Im looking to convert my 71 Firebird to HEI. What do I have to do? Its a D.U.I. distibutor, if that helps. thanks........Jerry

Replace the entire ignition wire with a 10ga wire going to the "Bat" or "Ign" terminal of the HEI cap. Make sure you have a full 12-13 volts at that terminal.

The wire he is talking about comes from the starter. Sometimes people replace the stock coil setup for an HEI and don't replace the wire. They get lower volt readings and the distributor won't work as well.

I just looked at my wiring diagram. It looks like the wire that goes to the coil is yellow. I remember mine being black though, maybe my memory is mistaken. There is also a red and a purple coming off the starter. The red goes to the alternator and the purple goes to the fuse box.

Couldn't you use the red one going to the alternator? As soon as the ignition is turned on, doesn't full voltage go to the alternator and the HEI?

|
If I remember right I think you need to run a fuse if you o it that way or the car will stay idling after you shut it off because it is getting constant voltage from the alternator.

Typically the standard system has two coil wires: the first is for starting, usually yellow, and comes from the ignition switch IGN2 terminal on "A" bodies, OR the "R" terminal on the starter solenoid for "F" bodies. THe wire for power when running is a resistance wire that ultimately comes from the IGN1 terminal on the ignition switch. For HEI use, bypass the resistance wire with a 12 Ga. wire; leave the yellow wire where it is, i.e. the two wires come together at the HEI BAT terminal.
You can't use the alternator output wire, it has battery voltage all the time. If you connect to that, your ignition will be on all the time; really bad for gas mileage  Geo
