BOP recently came out with a composite distributor gear for pontiacs. That's the significance of the gear in his avatar.

Thanks, Poor...
Seems like a good idea, considering the factory's bad design of 'drain-back oiling' to the distributor gear. I added a galley plug with a .030" hole on my engine to help with this issue, but I don't think my iron camshaft needs a composite gear. Nice to know they are making new stuff!!!...Robert |

I know of a block, built on 428 has GME (General Motors Experimental) on the side, did have the crank, I believe it was like the 990 SD, but ended up installing it in an Early Butler rebuild and delivered it to Dallas Tex. for Drag racer in Houston Area. Can't recall what happened to the heads and intake.

The composite gear is for use with roller cams. I have on in my 400 with a hyd roller. After 3000 miles it still looks like new.

Is that a lot of excess flashing in the rear opening or just the lighting of the picture?

it was a wishfull thinking number,NONE were ever produced. There were 3 3in main 4.21 stroke cranks said to be made and a hand full of 4in stroke 3in mains.Kellog I believe made them for the factory. There were also a few 3 1/4 main angled cap blocks made to run with the 990 SD crank. All develpomental stuff. The only engines actually made were 25 303 RA V SCCA engines and a 100 or so 400 RA V.Don Keefe might be able to ad more or correct my mistakes.Tom

Steve, both Kellog and Moldex made cranks for Pontiac, they are both still making cranks, call them and ask what happened to the dies.Last used in 1972 or about, bet they were factory dies and went in the same trach our Alu. blocks came out of.Tom

The cranks were forged by a company located
on the west side of Detroit who has gone out of business long ago. This is per Bob Gillian and "Whitey" from Moldex. I suspect the dies were destroyed at the same time the company closed but typically the dies were owned by GM so who knows where they are today. Tom Nell told me the number of 366 crate engines was much higher that the 100 mentioned in Tom S note. Most of the 303 parts initially went to H.B. in Texas and were later bought by Ron Sherman. The engine that was in Milt's car, I believe, came from that "Crate motor" program through one of Pontiac's parts marketing groups and was not an engineering piece, according to Tom Nell.
If would be like Ford SVO designing and selling parts that did not come out of the normal Ford Engineering system. Ford "Crate Engines" fit that description too! Tom V.

I think the crate motor program was for 400s?I know a guy that has a couple and have talked to MANY people that have either seen or owned the 400 crate motors but never a 366.FYI,Tom
