Has anybody replaced the small chrome plated knobs on the cables down by the kick panels?

A friend has a 69 GTO we're working on, and the chrome has flaked off of his. He bought reproduction chrome plated knobs from one of the major suppliers, but can't figure out how to get the old ones off and hte new ones on.

Has anyone done this before?

I think that thay are pressed on, Just hold the rod they are on and pull like haydees.

Crush them with a big set of pliers.
If you try to pull them off you will either screw up the cable or mess up the kick panel hole where the cable goes through it.
I have also cut them off with a cutting wheel in a Dremel tool, which works well but you have to be quick and careful to avoid the melting plastic.

I haven't seen these yet. It sounds like these things are molded onto the shaft, and may have splines like a screwdriver. So how do you install the replacements? Do they just press on, or do you have to put something like an epoxy into the hole when you install the shaft? What prevents them from pulling off when you open the vents?

I changed mine just like buzzojoe said. I crushed the old ones with a pair of chanel locks and pressed the new ones on. I did not use any epoxy to hold them, they are a tight fit. You probally would have to drill the hole to a bigger size so you could get epoxy in them.

I am too at this stage. I cut my old ones off and are ready to put the new ones on. Glad to hear I don't have to put adhesive in them. Sorry to hijack this post but related..does anyone have a picture of what the screws (4 or 5 I think) that hold the kick panel (non ac) to the cowl look like? They are hidden under the kick panel vent cover. I bought an interior screw kit and the ones they say are for it don't look right (big sunken washer like what holds on the door panels) plus there was only 3 in the bag for both panels??? The ones I had on the old panels were a mix of different ones too. Thanks, Jeff

I'm with buzz, I used a dremel and cutoff wheel. I cut them up each side lenghtwise and pulled them off. I got new knobs from PY, some pressed on, and the others I used JB Weld.
