Automatic or standard?

Standard shifters are available from Hurst as a direct bolt in. Work and feel great. I put one in mine last year. Having the original rebuilt at Hurst, but the turnaround time was to great to wait with out putting the replacement in.

I was about to ask the same question, but for an auto. I've got a 700r4 in my '68 and as it is right now, I can't shift into 1,2, or 3 (only D). It'd be $85 for an adapter to use my beat-up stock one or a little more money for an aftermarket shifter. Has anyone installed a Quicksilver or Hurst V-Matic on their console?

I put a Hurst dual-gate in my 68 Firebird when I went from ST200 to TH350:

Dual gate shifter conversion pics

My shifter is actually out of an Olds 442. I originally tried a GTO dual gate shifter but it was too "tall" for my tastes - stuck out of the console a little. GTOKen was successful with this swap by dropping the shifter down into the tranny hump a little.

The 442 shifter was a near "bolt-in". It has a form factor identical o the existing first-gen shifters. I really like the mod, and would reecommend it. Hardest part is finding a 442 shifter!

Regards,
Bob Trimpe
