I installed a Pertronix ignitor and flame thrower coil in my basically stock 67 GTO. Sometimes the engine is hard to start and turns slowly. I've read where there could be voltage drops in the wiring leading to this condition.
I installed using the way the harness is currently set-up. Should I be using 12V from the fuse block, and connect it to the coil, independant of the harness? thanks. |

The Pertronix conversion should have nothing to do with the cranking speed as you attempt to start your engine. If the initial timing is set too high then that might affect cranking speed. Most HEI's run full battery voltage. Points go through a ballast resistor that limits running voltage to about 9 volts. Your primary ignition feed should come from a "key on" source such as an unused accessory terminal in the fuse block. Don't run a wire from a source that is "hot" when the key is removed. If you run the stock wire to the distributor you will limit the output voltage due to the reduced feed voltage, but this will not affect how the car turns over (cranks).

Did you pull the disty out of the engine or move it from it's original setting to install the module?? If it's cranking slow it sounds like you may have gotten your initial timing to far advanced.

Did you make sure you had the correct coil wire combo for your engine (white and red or the yellow and red wire coil)? The pickup coil and the ignition coil have a matched polarity. When viewed on an oscilloscope, the coil has a very distinct wave pattern, which is completely different when the polarity is reversed, thus altering the timing. You must match your pickup coil to the ignition coil. I too installed a Pertronix coil, but the 71,000 volt race version. Since this coil was only available for Chevy distributors (yellow/red wire for clockwise rotation), I had to change my pickup coil to the one with a yellow connector plug (changing the polarity to match the coil designed for clockwise rotating distributors). If you have a miss-matched setup, you will experience hard starting, backfiring, some engine roughness, and there will be a higher impedance in the system due to the polarity change, which in effect also retards the timing. For a Pontiac engine, you should have a white/red wire coil with the pickup coil having the clear connector plug.
