Am running a 3800# car and looking for serious street performance. How about a pretty hairy solid cam using rhoades lifters ( to boost bottom end)! Car is a 4 sp.; 4:10 rear and a 6400 rpm rev. Has anybody used the newer tight lash solids? How about it guys! Any recommendations? Thanks!

You can't use Rhodes lifters on a solid cam. If you want to use Rhodes you will have to have a hydraulic cam.

3800 lb car + 4 speed + big Pontiac power + racing equals disaster. Keep it a cruiser or get an automatic. With the 4 speed, if you race it you will break more parts than carter has pills.

I plan on keeping street tires on my T/A 'cause I know about ST-10,s and hard (1.7 60' times)launches. For the time being 1.9's or so will be the rule of the day. The idea is to make the engine so as to attain trap speeds near 120 in the 1/4. suspension is later. The reason I mentioned Rhodes in a solid cam is because I've heard of people using hyd. lifters w/a solid. Just use a internal snap ring(tru arc retainers) and set to zero.

I love solids, but putting a hydraulic lifter on it would hurt it across the board. Are you meaning taking a hydro lifter & modifying it to act like a solid?

Plugging some numbers in, youll need roughly 586 crankshaft hp (469 at the wheels) assuming a 20% drivetrain loss & a 200lb driver to get you to a whopping 4000lbs on the line and 120mph trap speed. Thats a tall order for that type of cam set-up. Can you put the car on a diet? How about some bottle power

I remember a guy tried using hydraulic lifters on a solid cam in a BBC and the result was a broken cam and busted block. If you really have your mind set on a solid cam then you may want to check out one of the TFX cams Jim Taylor helped develope. I set one up for a friend a few years ago and once set the lifters never need readjusted, sounded good and propelled a 74 GTO to low 7.80's in the 1/8th.

Your car will never hook up on street tires to get a 120 MPH trap speed. The street tires will save parts breakage but will hamper the performance. I think you will have to decide on a street car or race car.

Diamond Jim last I knew that Jim Taylor was in the process of introducing some new grinds, RHolmes on this board had one in his 74 GTO a few years ago and he and I were talking the other night about the TFX ( He lives within 15 miles of me and I've been helping him on his Judge). If you can catch him on he has the information to hook you up with Jim Taylor. I may even consider one for my 412 as I'm undecided on exactly how I'm going to go with it at this time.
