This is aimed at those that either made a direct change from one to the other in a similar duration figure or the builders on here that dyno lots of engines. I had a discussion with a friend on this and I don't think the Hyd Roller like we have with the retrofit lifters is worth much if anything over a good flat due to the weight. It looks like they would looking at the lobes and duration figures but the few Ive seen post dyno numbers or track data the ROllers do not seem to actually run any better.
I see the new cars with hyd rollers and durations in the 220's make 500 + hp with about 350 cid Ive not seen anyone post anything like that from a pontiac engine. It just seems like a lot of money for little or no gain in performance. discussion welcomed !!
Thanks !

IMO,its like being half pregnant,if you want a roller go to a solid roller, either a race, street or even a hyd. roller cam with solid roller lifter.Tom

My dads 4250 lb GrandPrix runs 7.80 (should run mid to low 12s in the 1/4) in bad air with a Hyd.Roller (it also doubles as a tow car once in while). My opinion is that they are worth some power if you plan on keep the rpms below 6000. But are they worth the cost compared to the extra power, that would have to be up to the person spending the money.

Nice numbers slowbird, but I bet theres a dozen with 041 or similar cams that have ran as well or close.

Then we all should run 041 cams ?

You might be right. That same cam did run 11.5 to 11.6 in my 3950lbs Firebird. You can reach your et goals with either style cam but one will be more streetable than the other but will cost alot more.

Yes, Steve, everybody. And d-ports (they're just as good). And 68 to 72 intake manifolds. And Quadrajets. And don't forget the Rhoad's lifters.

Sorry, strike that.
It is a good subject. For the most part I think the roller will make more power on the dyno, but the difference may not relate in track performance.
Even with the same duration and lobe separation, with the roller you will be picking up more horsepower AND TORQUE across the entire rpm range. Typically a wider power range than a hyd flat tappet.
Idle quailty? Between the two my bets on the roller. And I'll bet the driveabilty might be even better. Again if we are comparing the same or similar duration.

This is getting good !
So do you think a hyd roller with say 10 degrees more duration would have similar driveabilty to a standard hydralic with 10 degrees less measured at .050 ? I do not run or beleave the 041 is the ultimate cam its just one Ive seen lots of people toute as the best overall flat hyd in a moderate engine. I personally run a new style fast ramp comp cam and like it. I will probably do a solid lifter cam next time they seem to run very well. Ive just not seen the track numbers that say the hyd roller is making more power in a pontiac. I've seen it in chevys and stuff. I am wondering if it is that Pontiacs don't respond to them like the other makes.

not intending to hyjack the thread, but what could I expect to see if I go from hydro lifters to solid lifters with my 041 cam?

Thanks

I just when to a HYD roller from a 2800 summit camshaft. the roller is 216/224 and has 480/501 lift. sounds stock and rev's great.
for my needs right now it works good 455 tripower and tko 5 speed 3.36 rear gears

i run the hydrolic roller xe288/294 comp camps. I realy like it but i have never tested it back to back with any other cam. It has great street manners and i have run a best of 11.83 @ 113 with this cam. I believe i can get more out of it. i kinda wish i would have gone with the next step up which would have been the 308. Sure i could go alot faster but this is my daily driver on 93 octane. Now if i coul only get it to run as well as Jim Hands wagon......

The hyd. roller that I was refering to idle with about 11 to 12 inch of vacuum in my 462. It has 242-252 dur. @.050. Its a very streetable cam. A friend of mine has the xe284 cam thats about the same duration @.050, it does have more lope than ours, not sure what his vacuum is though (all have to find out). To me the main advantage is the amount of lift that you can run compare to the duration, our is .594. It all about what you want and how much you want to spend. I personally would take a hyd. roller over a solid flat tappet any day if its a 455 or larger(if cost were equal). If its a 400 then go solid or solid roller so you can turn the rpms up.

I used a Comp Cams solid roller years ago in a small blk 400 chevy and had one lifter loose needle bearings and eat up a lobe. They do require maintenance.
So you'll have to figure that into your "horsepower per dollar" equation.
I'll be content with my solid flat tappet.

I pulled a XE274 out and slid in a Dude custom hyd roller. I also changed from 1 5/8" headers to 1 3/4". Old set up the car ran 11.29@116 New set up best so far [email protected]. I have a 462 and going thru the traps at 5600. The duration of the roller is close to a XE284 but I have .600 lift. I like it.

come on now apples, oranges.....
My newer pontiac has a hydralic roller and I like it just fine plenty of torque from idle to shift.
