Im running a 455 w/4X-7H heads (2.11/1.77)and 9.4 to 1 compression, 1.65 rockers, Crane Power Max Hydraulic Cam H-288-2, Flat Top pistons, Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, Rochester Quad (rebuilt-800cfm), 400TH tranny w/Transgo shift kit, but I have a stock torque converter from a original 400ci/400th tranny setup. The problem is just like a recent post where when I crank it, it just doesnt want to idle correctly. The carb has an electric choke.

I dont know what the stock converter is but could that be the problem why it wont idle when its in gear?

BD I have he same thing going on. I adjusted my idle to 1000 rpm when in neutral. Then when I put it in gear it drops to about 800 rpm. When the car is warmed up that is what it does. When I first start it runs rough, so I let it warm up and it settles down.

I am interested in the responses here, to help me out too.

Tom, your car sounds perfectly normal to me. A drop from 1,000 to 800 is what SHOULD be happening when you put it in gear. And it will be touchy when trying to put it in gear until it warms up a little. Close your hood man, your car is fine :-)

A.J., I just answered you first post on this. Your combination is so much like mine, one would think we worked together planning it. I run a Holley 950 carb versus your QJet, 9.8 compression versus your 9.4, and everything else is pretty much the same.

My stall is 2,600 though, so unless your QJet fast idle is doing something weird, my money says your TC is causing your bigger than normal drop in idle speed. 1,000 to 800 is fine. 1,000 to 600 is a bit much ...

Mike thanks that was what I was planning to do.

BD I live IVO Mercury and Pembroke. In the CG at Portsmouth. Just got off a ship and in my twilight tour on the road training ships in Electronic Navigation. Shame couldn't have met sometime to swap notes.

True Armadillo, that would have been outstanding adn I would have really looked forward to it. But I still have 7 years to go in the Air Force so who knows I may mak it back to Langley AFB, Ill keep you in mind if I do. I was living in the Fox Hill area just past Buckroe road. I had a great house with a detached 25ft X 30ft two story garage. I have a three car garage right now but nothing close to the room I had there in that one.

Tom, Thanks for the offer and Ill deffinetly look you up brother. Nosliw, that drop in idol is (raising one eyebrow). I mean my little six cylinder pick-up drops from 900 to 700, but thats normal....well when reading about a 455 it says in Haynes and Chilton manuals that idol is what...800rpm. So how the heck can 600 or 1,000 be okay?
