Regarding valve lash adjustment, everything being stock ,how do you ADJUST the valves in a 1965 pontiac 326ci . You have to turn the nut on the rocker up to certain point to get the valve adjusted don't you. I keep hearing that
you tighten to 20 ft/lbs, tighten what ? I just rebuilt the engine and have got it together and it runs I just need to adjust valves/rockers properly.

What I do and have been taught is, before you ever start the engine you adjust the lash on the valves. The way that I have been taught goes like this.

TDC#1
Prime engine oil system. If you haven't soaked your lifters prime system multiple times to be sure that you have that .001-.003 that the oil will make between the lifter and rod when running.
Start on Exhaust valves 1,3,4,& 8 Intake 1,2,5,& 7. You spin the push rod in between your index finger and thummb while you tighten the adjusting nut. You want to tighten it till the rod feels like the slop is gone. Not too tight to where you have to forcably make it spin or you will be bending things. Once you have the push rod where it still spins with a little effort and doesn't feel loose tighten it 1/2 turn more. You repeat this on all location previously mentioned.
Then you rotate the engine one full turn to tdc #6 and repeat the same proceedure on Exhaust 2,5,6,7 and Intake 3,4,6,& 8.

This should be all the adjustments needed.
