I recently read an article in a Camaro magazine "I know what the hell am i doing reading a Camaro mag" but here in Kuwait Pontiac mags are scarse :P
Any how the article was talking about a rear mounted turbo kit that was being marketed by some one. And by rear mounted I mean in the back of the car under the trunk pan. The car made 313 rwp before the turbo and 462 hp after the addition of the turbo kit, and a reprogramed turbo computer. My question is has anyone tried a setup like this with our traditional pontiacs. I know it would allow you to continue to run your a/c compressor, and you could use most of your existing exhaust includng headers and such, not to mention not having to make brackets to relocate any other components under the hood. You could even set up a twin turbo setup if you were running dual exhaust just run one pipe to each turbo. The only thing you would have to do would be to run one return pipe back to the carb, and that would seem like it would take up alot less room nunder the hood than a twin turbo set up, the only down side i can see to this is that your turbos might take a licking from road debris and such. I know i have read some where that your turbos should be mounted as close to the engine as poss. By this I mean as close to the exhaust gasses as they are leaving the engine. How can running the turbo in the rear work so well. Anyone have any comments on this?> Mike |

I read that same article. In it, the author states that it spools up just fine. I imagine that if the turbine were sized properly, it would spool up just fine.
I was also curious if any of our turbo users had tried it. It seems like a pretty good way to be sneaky with a turbo.

Interesting... I did not see this article but rear mounted turbos had crossed my mind at some point while planning my setup. I disregarded it as crazy thought and proceeded in the traditional twin configuration.
I figured that too much heat would be lost by the time the exhaust went all the way to the back of the car and also running oil lines and returns would be a major problem unless the turbos used a stand alone oiling system of some sort. Too much piping running the length of the car for my liking and probably a huge efficiency loss as well. |

Oh forgot to mention that they used a seperate electric oil pump for return oil. I also figured you would loose alot of heat from the distance the exhaust gas had to travel.
Some one should do a rear mount here. If some one wants to supply the blow off valves, and electric oil pump and carb hat I will be glad to try a twin turbo set up, as I already have 11 turbos, and one matched pair should work for my application :P Mike |

I read about a rear mounted turbo on an LT1 car a couple of years ago. To address the loss of exhaust heat, ceramic coating was used. And most of the length of pipe was straight so overall "not much" longer than the twisting and turning usually done under the hood. Never read any comparisons about underhood vs. rear-mounted though.

Skip, the air filter under the camaro was a standard K&N filter with no cover over it, I would think you would benifit from adding some kind of box to the air filters. You could use a filter canister off of a ford ranger or f150, and just mount it on a small bracket.

A buddy of mine is an STS distributor/certified installer in Fremont, CA. I was the biggest skeptic around when these kits came out for the F-bodies.
I am no longer a skeptic. The things flat out work, and I've not met anyone that has one that is upset with the purchase. The last one I saw at his shop was putting down 522rwhp on 10 pounds of boost. Still idled like a stocker. There is simply nothing as good as forced induction IMO. Mike M

Because I no longer have a big fuel tank in the back I have a lot more room to mount my twin turbos at least a foot off the ground. I'll just have to shield my fuel cell from the heat. Plus I already have my turbos, wastegates etc. all I would need to figure out is the oiling and tubing, which hopefully wouldn't be too hard with smaller diameter tubing. Plus then I can definitely have my A/C.(Need it during HOT Vegas summers!) Less weight and heat up front is also good. Hard decision to make! |
