On my 68, I'm having an electrical problem where there is power to the accessories at all times. The "generator" light is just barely glowing at all times also. Everything works perfectly. When you start up the car the generator light comes completely on and never goes off.
I bought the car with this problem and I thought that it might solve itself while I was working on it this winter, because I changed the ignition switch, interior wiring harness and instrument cluster. When I unplug the harness from the back of the alternator the generator light comes on fully at all times. When I unplug the voltage regulator nothing changes. The engine compartment harness has been spliced and repaired over the years, but it looks like everything has a home. Any ideas? |

Joe,
I had the same problem with my 72. I replaced my alternator and it fixed the problem. I had a similar problem with my 72 too, it turned out to be the engine wire harness on that one.  Eric http://www.cardomain.com/member_page...=358363&page=1

Normal functioning of the idiot light requires the connections to the regulator and alternator. Since nothing changes when you unplug those, you obviously have some other weird wiring issue. Your instrument panel is somehow getting power when the switch is off, indicating a wiring issue plus maybe a non-existent ground for your instrument panel. First start by pulling fuses to see which circuit is incorrectly supplying power.

My 68 Bird did the EXACT same thing..shorted alternator..

It sounds like the diodes are burned out in the alternator. When power flows backwards through the wiring the light comes on.
