Ive got a 67 gto with a 400 motor in it just rebuilt. My question is what is considered a normal running temp. it seems to run a little hot,Ive got a suburban with a 350 in it so Im comparing its normal temps with the 400 and it seem high. Also Its got a holley double pumper that really sucks the gas so I want to change it out for something a little less extreme, any suggestions?
Thanks

Mitch,

Welcome to the Forums.

If the engine is newly rebuilt, clearances are proably tight and a little extra heat is normal. Verify the actual temp with a calibrated or IR guage, and 180 degrees + or minus 10 degrees is good.

Most folks on the board favor Q-jets for the best economy/performance balance. I recommend that you go to Cliff Ruggles, a regular poster here for a properly setup Q-Jet for that 400.

67 with a 400 was set to run at 190F. You want a Frank Jordan Q-jet.

I would make sure that it has a 160° thermostat in it. Personally I would leave the double-pumper on it because Holleys are unbeatable for tuneability and throttle response, unless you don't want to have to touch it, then put a Q-jet or Edelbrock on it. My $.02. -Jesse

My 67 has, for the 13 years I've owned it, through 2 different 67 400 GTO motors, allways run warm. Around town runs 190+ on the highway on a long haul, may run up to 220. I have changed the guage system and done everything short of an aluminum radiator and it still runs hot. It has never boiled over and I now have 80,000 in the last 5 years with no problems because of temp. Someone told me to allways run the correct temp thermostat. He said "the higher temp thermostat, the more restriction and the more restriction, the longer the water is in the radiator to help cool it down". I thought the correct temp was 195 and my car just doesn't want to run well until it hits 190 anyway.
