I have a 1997 grand am that won't start. Cranks, but won't fire. This was an intermitant problem, but now it is dead. Once the car would start, it would run without every quiting. But after it would sit over night, or all day, It would not start. I used my snap on mt2500, & it shows no codes. I do not appear to have any spark, but I am not thinking coil packs, because I thought those usually fail one at a time & cause more of a rough idle? (this is the 3.1 V6)
I can hear the fuel rails prime for two seconds, when I turn on the key. Could this be a crank sensor? Can anyone tell me a good way to test the sensor, or how to test the coils? I am a little lost on this one. Thanks, 68ragtop 1968 GTO Convertible (currently my resto project) 1978 Gold Edition Trans am 1979 10th aniversary T/A 1980 Pace Car Trans am

This explaines how it works. It can be tested with a regular DMM (volt meter) Just hook up to the signal wire and turn the engine.

Could be a crank sensor, but you should also check for power out of the ing switch.
the starter is obviously getting power if it cranks, but the ing moudul may not be getting power. also you should check fuel pressure, even though you can hear the pump run doesnt mean you ahve enough. |

you also have the ing module, what the coil pack sit on. those can fail, and of course the pcm can always be the problem.
WHAT DOES YOU SCANNER YOU HAVE DO? will it read real time data? check the 24x crank signal is there a rpm reading? |

I would actually start at the coil packs.I am sure you dont need me to tell ya that these little boogers can mess up your whole day.You said it progressivily got worse?you might want to consider the crank sensor. It did the same thing on my sisters car.I cant recall if it was the same year or not but it would start hard, run with no problems, sit over night and not want to start the next day.It finally just wouldn't start at all.I took it into the shop for her, shelled out the 80 clams to hook it up to a diagnostic and that was the problem...the crank sensor.
