I have two light sockets in my tail lights that the bulbs do not seat correctly. When I apply slight pressure on the top of the lamp they come on, but when left alone don't work. It is like the spring part of the socket is not pushing up and making a good connection.

Anyone have an idea on a quick fix?

Get new sockets at the auto parts store.

Yup. Any autostore will have cheapo 1157 sockets but if you have just one or two acting up it won't be long before the others do the same. My 69FB had "dim" lights for quite some time but after i installed a PY (M&H) trunk harness ~ they really lit up.

I took mine completely apart and cleaned everything, put it all back together and they work fine. Years of corrosion and dust/dirt get in there and make it hard for the springs to work. Worth a shot if you're going to replace them anyway.

Any chance that the bulbs are inserted half a rotation out? The pins on the side are staggered in height so they go in one way correctly. Just a thought. If correct, the corrosion idea is a typical problem also.

Guys, thanks for the suggestions. I have already ordered a couple of sockets from the auto parts store. I tried switching the lamps 180 degrees but they still do not make good connection and rattle.

The next question I have is on a 68 how do you replace them? I can not physically reach the wire end of the socket from either the trunk or up through the bumper.

I did mine with bumper off. Found some sockets at autozone. but werent exactly the same as the original.

If you can aford to replace the whole darn tailight harness, M&H sold me mine, great company to deal with BTW. It fit excatly as the orignal & looks excatly the same too, even the connectors are the same. As stated your due for replacement with the others giving you trouble it's only a short time before the rest do.

Sometimes the grease that the factory or some mechanic used gets hard and will hold the springs down. Try spraying with a good cleaner and W-D 40 Probley the springs are weak but worth a try.

Thanks again, I will try the WD40 to see if I can loosen them up. If that does not work does anyone know of a way to replace these without pulling the bumper?

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried the WD40 but no luck. Looks like I need to replace the sockets. I bought a couple at the parts store but can anyone tell me is there a way to replace these on a 68 without having to pull the whole bumper?
