Just got back my 67 GTO from the shop. They rebuilt the engine and transmission, but I now have what appears to be an oil leak from the rear main seal. How can this be with only 100 miles on the rebuild? The place that did it is pretty crappy and I am going to have to fight with them to fix this and other things as well. If it doesn't work out, I will post a warning in the BBB section.

Two things-
Did they use a rope seal? Shame on them if they did; the BOP viton seal is the way to go, even at 35 bucks, it beats pulling the engine again. Check to make sure it isn't the trans leaking (only if you have a manual, red fluid is hard to confuse with oil). |

common problem-I also blew a finger size hole out of a new rebuilt engine. A "rag seal" was used and it is not good. Viton is only way to go and so easy to install. There are dozens of posts in archives on this subject. It is cheap fix except for all the work pulling engine again. Live and Learn. Best wishes and HAPPY MOTORING

I had the same problem. What I thought was a leaky seal turned out to be loose bolts on the oil sump. Carefully snug the bolts in an opposing design. Don't forget the one underneath the starter. This stopped my leak permanently. Also, avoid synthetic oils--- they'll always find a way out.
Good Luck! |

I had a leaky rear main on my last 455 too. So last ditch effort before pulling the engine I dropped my pan, got the old seal out, sprayed carb cleaner in the groove to clean it, loaded the new viton seal with silicone on the back, a little oil on the lip and slid her up around and let her sit over night. Said a prayer and fired the next day. No leak. BOP Viton, the only way to go.

Mine was a leaky 3 "tit" pan seal.
