HELP!!!!! my son has a 67 tempest, he just finished the body and decided to change rear-ends, he has a very built 66" 389 w/auto trans. Car had origianal,1wheel wonder w/273 ratio. At Iola swapmeet/car show he bought a rear-end complete housing & gears & axles, w/373 posi, this was out of a 70" camaro,we knew the housings would not interchange BUT!!! the nice gentleman told us "guess we had sucker writen all over us" that no problem the gears all interchange so we bought it. WRONG!!!!we now figured out that they don't interchange, ferthermore there is 4 different GM 10 bolt rear-ends. Thus bringing me to the question, finally! The old rear-end pinion was wrecked in the process of removal "DON'T ASK" So what do we need to look for in our search for a used rear-end, or should we forget the whole idea and just go new components for the original housing? Wanting to go posi w/323 or 355 ratio

Personally I would find an A body (GTO,Chevelle,etc..)12 bolt posi,or a Ford nine inch setup to fit, that way you KNOW it can handle what you're going to put through it! Just exactly what I am doing to my '67 GTO at the moment!
Even if you are on the right track, you will get runover if you just sit there!

Putting a ford 9" would require some fabrication for mounts? sounds costly? I was told that the spring mounts and the torque arm mounts are not the same in the later model 12" rear-ends

Obviously it boils down to how much you can spend! Any 64-72 GM A body rear end will fit. That means a twelve bolt will bolt right in.A Ford nine inch that is a "bolt-in" will cost around 2gs .Worth every penny if you've got that many pennies!Or you could rebuild the stock unit.Have to find the parts but do-able.Remember not all 10 bolts are the same, check anything used before you buy it!
Even if you are on the right track, you will get runover if you just sit there!

I hate to pore crap on u'alls fine mess but all 64-72 A body rear ends are not the same. The mounting for the springs are different and I believe that is 67 or 68 they changed the angle of the upper control arms. I also believe that the housing lenghts are slightly different. I found out from some one on the forum that the rear end width on a 442 is narrower than a GTO of the same year{66}. Go figure. Hot Rod or Car Craft did a article on rearends of the 10 and 12 bolts but I don't remember when. Possible maybe to find on their web site? No an A body is the medium size Cutlass/442 Skylark/GS Tempest/Lemans
/GTO and Chevelles. Spend the money and call one of the Rear end sellers in the magazine like Randy's www.ringpinion.com or gears and rears at reiderracing.com or Curry's in street rodders mag or maybe contact old pinion head on the forum here. I don't know what exactly he does but I believe he is a restorer and he does sell parts and is very knowledgeable. Sorry if I got this wrong old pinion head. To me a 9" is the way to go but a Dana 44 will take a licking and go on ticking to. 9" are easier to swap gear ratios. If u'all rebuild the rear end have it professionaly done as it takes special expensive tools to do it right. Good luck DRIVE IT LIKE U'ALL STOLE IT! connman

I have a 67 4DR HT Catalina and have the same problem. But I do have the shop manual for 67' maybe this will help abit. The manual covers Tempest Models
Series# 23300 Sports Coupe 4-Door Sedan Station Wagon Tempest Custom Models Series# 23500 Sports Coupe Hardtop Coupe 4-Door Hardtop 4-Door Sedan Convertible Station Wagon See if your style number matches any of these. *** The following is straight from the manual: Nine different axle ratios are available for the various car models. They can be identified by the code stamped on the rear L.H. axle tube adjacent to the carrier, or on the left rear brake drum surface. Three differential cases which differ in ring gear mounting dimensions are used on 1967 models: One for the 2.56 and 2.78 ratios, One for the 2.93, 3.08, and 3.23 ratios, and One for the 3.36, 3.55, 3.90 and 4.33 ratios. When changing axle ratios, be sure to use the proper differential case. For the 2.78 ratio the code is Std. Diff.Code=WC Lock Diff.Code=YC I don't know if this helps out in your search, but if you need any info from the 67' manual just ask and I'll look it up. Brent67CAT |
