OK, it seems like it never ends.

My fresh motor is running great, good oil pressure, etc.

However when I first start it up I get some noticeable lifter tick that eventually fades away after it warms up. I used the Summit 2802 cam kit which had the HT-951 lifters in it.

So it seems these lifters bleed down significantly when it sits overnight and take awhile to pump back up.

I did the adjustment cold, 1/2 turn past zero lash.

Are these lifters junk?

Also, will this effect damage anything? I don't have the money to order up a $100 set of Comps or Cranes...

Also, I experienced the dreaded Hot Start issue yesterday. Drove the car for about 15 minutes to run over to the parts store for some light bulbs, shut it off - came back out 10 minutes later and it cranked so slowly that it just wouldn't start. Waited 15 minutes, and although it cranked slowly it did catch and I drove home.

Anyone have experience with these Summit Lifters?

Not sure what to do about the hot start issue - I have read all the posts... cannot afford a mini starter... Battery cable is brand new, connections are tight and clean.. Maybe a heat shield?

A1, I have the 2801/lifters and I have the same experience. Clack like hell for about 5 seconds after a prolonged shut down.

I don't consider them junk, can't comment on long term effects, but most of us end up rebuilding far short of long term effect issues anyway.

I am going to re-adjust them tomorrow night after the engine is warm. I will adjust with the engine running to zero and give em 1/2 turn.

I just hate to do it that way because of all the oil that splashes out, but it probably is the only way to be sure they are adjusted correctly.

Or you can buy a set of 'rocker-stoppers' that clip on the rockers and block the pushrod oiling hole.

Thanks b-man.

I have the original set of chrome covers, a little pitted, but I tought I would stash those awayand save them.

I wonder, has anyone used aluminum foil to fabricate a make shift set of oil stopers?

They don't ned to be on long, just long enough to go through one head at a time, then just remove and toss them in the trash.

I may try that...

Thanks

If it is your lifters,do they all tick or just one or two?
So far as the hot start problem try improving your ground the stock cable is way to thin in most cases. I use a delco reman starter with larger cables starts/cranks great all the time and solved my start problem.
And your are right it never ends

Well it is hard to tell, a LOT of them tick. Sounds ike a sewing machine when it first fires up cold or after it has sat for a while.

Where did you get extra thick cables? I am using brand new 4 guage. I doubt thicker cables will fit as these are a pain to get installed as it is. There is little room to work on the starter with HO manifolds, and the wire tube that mounts to the right motor mount.

And getting the starter in and out is also a real pain.

I have looked for 3 guage or even 2 guage and nobody has it, Advance, AutoZone and Pep Boys all have 4 guage.

Thanks

The starter problem is most likely one of two things.

1) Poor connections, especially the ground.

2) Heat soak in your solenoid. You have a few options to help keep the heat off the starter. A really cheap option is to get a piece of insulation and some foil tape. Dissasemble the solenoid and wrap it in insulation and hold the insulation in place with a layer of the foil tape. The foil tape will help reflect heat and the insulation is... well... insulating . Be careful to not put insulation in the area that is closest to the main body of the starter. Thin clearance there prevents you from being able to reassemble the solenoid to the starter if you wrap insulation all the way around the solenoid.

A1 I use the tin foil method works fine on my 66 GTO. Just create a lip for the foil to rest on the rim of the head closest to the fender. I used a wooden yard stick as a straight edge to crease and make the lip.

Thanks Ken, I'll check out the heavier ground cables..

Rod, never had any clearance issues before and I was using 1.65 rockers. I am now using 1.5 rockers but I'll check it out when I remove them.
