I have had this problem with my starter since I can remember. When I first crank the starter, it barely turns, seems like the battery is almost dead. "vwamp voom" then after holding it in start position for a little bit, will start cranking normally. It seems to go slow longer after it has been running and sat, but the battery and solenoid are in the trunk. had the problem before that, so I don't think it's resistance.(using #1 guage wire) It is a 10.5:1 compression engine, could it just be I need a high torque starter? these are also used starters I've been using. Any Ideas? It's a little embarrising to have a mean looking car and it have starting problems in the parking lot (they shut their mouths when I pull away though)

Worn starters will do that. Make sure your cable connection from the engine back to the battery negative is as good as the positive side. Preferably run a cable back to the battery rather than using a frame ground.
A high torque reduction gear starter will certainly crank the engine, tho. Perhaps just bite the bullet & get the reduction gear starter since you may need to upgrade the starter anyway.... George

thanks george, your always very helpful. I thought that's what the deal would be, but I'd rather seek advice before spending MORE money. If anyone has a high torque starter lying around to sell, let me know, if I have some loot, I may spring for it. [email protected]

Just yesterday I attempted to put in a new high torque mini starter into my 68 Firebird Conv w/455 and Hedman Headers. No luck. The selanoid hits the headers. The mounting plate on the new starter has a 2 position mount but neither one lets it fit. It puts the selanoid in the 2 oclock position and it needs to be between the 12 and 1 oclock position. It's a Hitachi starter. I called the performance store where I bought it and he said I might try to drill and re-tap some new mounting holes. Has anyone had the same problem and if so what was your solution??
Thanks in advance Roy |
