OK...so I'm replacing the rear main seal on my 350 with the BOP seal (not removing crank), and I decide to check the rest of the main bearings...at least the bottom halves. I found the #1 bearing scored, as well as crank journal. It will catch a nail on the crank, but the bearing is a bit worse. The #2 and 3 bearings have slight scores in them...just showing copper...the crank looks fine on those. I've had good oil pressure as well. I just wanted it to make it thru this year...at the track. I'll be building a stroker out the 400 I have for next year. What would you do??? I really don't want to spend much $ on it! Can I just put new bearings in it?? I've tried to attach pics. Thanks!

I would definately not run it any longer. It looks like the crank will need turned & new bearings. It appears something has gone through the motor. Did you have the bypass blocked off.

There will be nothing done with the motor if
I cannot just slap new bearings in it. The 350 was only meant to get me thru this year...guess I'll not be doing much racing, as I really am not willing to dump any $$ into it, and the stroker kit for my 400 is not in my budget at the moment. Maybe I can do a cheap rebuild on the 400 just to run it this season...

Getting the crank turned isn't that expensive. If you're willing to spend on new bearings and BOP rear seal I'd at least make a few calls to see what the local guys would charge to turn it.

I will do that...I figured it would be a couple hundred dollars (2-250) to get it turned. I'll make some calls. Thanks.

darien, don't go the cheap 400 rebuild. In the long run it will cost you more. drop the crank turn it and throw in the bearings. and have fun.

Ray...this is for the 350, not the 400! The 400 will sit until next year when I can budget for the stroker kit. I just want to get the 350 together so I can run this year with it.

DOH! I see what you were saying...yeah, I'm not gonna risk hurting the 400 block! I'm not going to cheap the 400 just to get it in!

Anyone have a ballpark figure for getting a crank turned??

Wow...wish the shops around here were that cheap. I was quoted $275 to start, and maybe less if the rod journals were OK from one shop, and $185 from another shop. Ughhh. Now I'm not sure what I'm gonna do. I guess it's either pay $300.00 or so, and race this year, or not pay anything and be pissed off. I do have another crank out of the 400...

Could I use it?? Guess I'd need to do some measuring...would I have to do anything to the rods other than replace the bearings??

If you're pitching this engine soon anyway why not consider cutting/polishing just the main in question? Should save a few bucks anyway. The 400 crank would need a rebalance for the 350 slugs. I think a crank kit would be cheaper/ as cheap as those prices.

I'd think doing it that way would pose a bearing issue...as far as obtaining 1 different sized bearing? A good idea nonetheless. I hope to get the motor to last me to mid November or so...pretty much only at the track, maybe 2x a month. I think I'm just gonna get it turned and be done with it...only $$.
