is there a alternative to rope seals , is there a neoprene seal made for 455 instead of the rope seals?

yes, there is. BOp engineering, Ames PY all carry a viton seal.

Engineer- are the seals superior to the rope ones?

depends, some can install a rope seal and never have a leak, others do it and always leak. Same can happen on the viton seals. Good installation is key.

The big advantage of using the BOP seal is the great reduction in drag on the crankshaft.There is almost none with the BOP seal!
