69 GTO, when i put on the dash lights, headlights, or turn signal lights, my gauges (oil, fuel, temp) all go to zero. Any suggestions would really help! Thanks!

Yeah, check the grounds. A good investment would be the factory service manual for your '69; there's real detailed wiring diagrams in that book's 'electrical' section.

thnaks for the advice. I thought it might be a ground problem. Does the headlight/dash light switch have a ground coming off of it? I think that it is just a switch and the lights are each grounded at their respective positins. Any more info would be great! Thanks for the advice about the service manual too! Any idea where I can fund an assembly manual for a 69? They don't seem to exsist!

no assembly manual for a 69 is available. You need the service manual or buy the CD.

Sure sounds like the ground for the gauges. your probably picking up a ground through the gauge light bulb filiments to make the gauges function until 12V is supplied to them. Do the lights come on on the gauges when you pull the switch? I have a complete harness in the basement I can check to tell you where the ground wire is if it will help.

the dash lights do come on, somewhat dim though, but when I put the dash lights on, the highbeam red light and both dash turn signal arrows illuminate, somewhat dimly too. I agree that it is probably a grounding issue, but the problem is that I do not know how it is grounded? Is there a grounding srtap? a wire? a ground throught the print circuit for the dash? Are the dash pods induvidually grounded? These are the questions that I cannot figure out yet. Any more help is really appreciated. Thanks

yep, it was a ground problem. The metal strap that connects the instrument pods was just laying on hte side ot the pod and not firmly connected to it. THanks for all your help!

arm019, did you get any pictures of the ground strap you were missing?.I'm having the exact same problem with mine.

where does this ground strap attach to,I don't see anything in my service manual about this.I tried grounding the cluster,and they are brighter.Does anyone have a diagram to show where this strap goes.Would'nt the cluster by be grounded by the dash which is attached to the body

A strap runs from the bottom corner of the gauge cluster to the wiper switch. Also if you have a clack, a strap should connect it to the gauge pod. This is very typical. Honestly I usually run a wire from the housing to the steering column to ensure a complete ground. If you painted the back of your housing when you did the restoration, this could be the main cause of your problem. I always had my housing plated to ensure this problem didn't happen. Also make sure all your ground straps are on your engine and are tight

thanks guys,the ground seemed to help.Hopefully that will cure the headlights draining my battery too. The blue paint inside the instrument pod is that special paint .I know you never see it ,but it has little surface rust on it

Reproduction factory tach. Never seen the backside of an actual factory tach so I don't know how accurate that black wrinkle finish with the black wire is...Probably not very.
I was posting you you'd see those stamped metal ground straps shown in Pete's drawings...Sometimes a photo of the items pictured helps.
