My 69 has tilt column that I purchased rebuilt about 5 years ago. The ignition switch never worked right. Sometimes it doesn't travel far enough to the start position and won't come back to the accy position. I have 4 ignition switches to choose from, three are pictured here (4th is in the car). I've read threads that say to use the green switch. I've also seen a part number list that says to use switch part number D1419A. Can't find this part number on any of my switches. Which is the correct one???

you know the switch is adjustable a little, and also check to make sure that the rod that goes down the column isnt bent and binding up, or the piece for the tilt on the rod is not broke

If you'll notice, the switches are built in opposing directions. Tilt switches move in the opposite direction from the non-tilt switch. You can tell by the reverse position of the switch housing from the connecting section, where the harnesses plug in.

Shown is a picture of the tilt in my '70 GTO. As you may be able to see, the switch is different than the ones you've shown. The switch you show to the right looks like a newer switch (1977???). The one to the left looks like a non-tilt '69 switch.

Yeah.. the rod can pose a problem. I straightened the rod before reinstalling my column, and should have left it in the bent configuration. I had to drop the column back down and bend the rod till it would not bind with the switch.. then everything was smooth again.

I have dug out a couple of switches, plus pulled the '70 tilt switch, to show some differences. The tan ones were around '72-? (seat belt buzzer systems???) and the green ones were before that ('69-71?, '68 and older had switches in dash). Top switches are the non-tilt and below that are the tilt switches. Note that the tilt switches have metal on both sides of where the connectors plug in.
Can one just take a green non-tilt top half and a tan tilt bottom half and make it work? I don't know. Someone try it (but not me). [This message was edited by Held for Ransom on May 28, 2003 at 11:35 PM.]

If you don't have access to both switches or don't want to bother, we have reproductions of both of the green switches above. Thanks everyone for your input. I'm blown away by the lengths you'll go through to help out....like Held For Ransom taking parts off his car and posting pics for me.
The bird comes out this weekend and i'll climb under the dash to see which switch is in there and inspect the linkage. Thanks again, Dan

Nah, I am not a computer geek. But a good friend is (familiar to many Pontiac people), and when he was a POCI tech advisor, he always had these weird looking addresses listed after his name and phone number. If you have access to any old Smoke Signals from the mid-eighties, you'll see what I'm talking about.
