AM RUNNING A 068 BLUEPRINT CAM IN MY 69 GTO. IT IS A RAIII 4-SPEED CAR WITH 3:23 GEAR. ALSO HAS A/C, P/S, P/B. SO IT ISNT A LIGHT WEIGHT. WOULD LIKE A LITTLE MORE PERFORMANCE OUT OF IT AND WAS THINKING OF GOING WITH A CROWER 60916 CAM. READ ANOTHER POST THAT READ IT HAS A FAIRLY LOPEY IDLE. OR SHOULD I GET A 744 CAM INSTEAD? CAR IS MAINLY A STREET CAR BUT WILL SEE SOME 1/4 MILE ACTION. WILL USE 1.5 ROCKERS WHATEVER CAM I GO WITH. HAVE BEEN THINKING ON THIS FOR A MONTH AND STILL UNDECIDED. WELCOME MORE INPUT. ALSO WILL ROLLER ROCKERS FIT UNDER STOCK VALVE COVERS?

Roller rockers will fit under stock valve covers..at least the Harland Sharp Rockers i had would. You may want to get some of those performance gaskets from napa, they are a good bit thicker than stock valve cover gaskets and will provide you with a little extra room.
The Crower you mentioned i hear is a good choice think that is the one Cliff has recomended a few times as well. I just put a Comp XE274 in my 455 and its got nice manners on the street and good Vac for power brakes, and that nice lopey idle but not too much..idles at 800 in gear and sounds perfect. Im running a 2500 stall think this cam may be a bit big for a 400 thoe but im not shure, but i know alot of ppl on the board use the XE274 and like it.

The Crower 60916 cam is well suited to the 400 street engine with the early high compression heads. KRE made 419hp with this cam with unported heads and HS 1.65 roller rockers. Some lope at idle, strong power from just off idle to the shift point. It works much like the RAIV cam in the 455 engine on a smaller scale.....Cliff

I AM ALMOST READY TO ORDER THE CROWER 60916 BUT JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE IT IS NOT TOO RADICAL FOR MY CAR. THE CAR WILL BE RACED ON OCCASION BUT MOSTLY JUST STREET DRIVEN. WANT IT TO RUN IN THE 13'S ANYWHERE WITHOUT HAVING TO RUN IT REAL HARD TO DO SO. ONLY MODIFICATIONS TO THE CAR ARE TORQUE TECH EXHAUST SYSTEM AND THE 48 HEADS HAVE BEEN CLEANED UP BUT NOT PORTED.

A good friend uses the 400/62's/60916 combination in his full weight daily driven 66 GTO. The engine was prepared here, zero deck, heavy TRW's, HS 1.65 rockers, RPM intake, 800cfm q-jet, stock HEI. The heads are mildly ported (mostly cleaned up) and crossovers filled. In full street trim runs 13.0's to 13.30 @ 105mph with so-so 2.0 to 2.25 60' times (spins most of the way thru first gear). A solid 12 second car on slicks. I would think your combo would see easly 13's with decent traction traction......Cliff

Most roller rockers will fit under the stock covers but many of the polylocks will not. I machine them down here for clearance if needed and/or use the thick gaskets, KRE sells them, ask Jeff about them while you're at KRE. You can probably run the 1.6 Ford roller rockers without clearance problems at the pushrod guide holes, the 1.65's will not clear for sure......Cliff

JKGTO,
You just need to be sure what you want out of your car and if it is an everyday driver or ocassional street/strip car. Just for your info, I have a 70 Judge RA III. The car is completly stock, 4 speed, 3:90 gear. When I rebuilt the engine I went with the 744 cam instead of the 068. I have been very pleased. It has a nice rumble at idle, not really a lope and it pulls hard through 6500 rpm. I also have a 72 GTO that I just finished a 455 with a good set of 6x heads. I was going to use the 744 cam in the 455 but Since the heads have a little work done to them I thought I needed a little more cam. I used a Comp 530 lift 250 duration. The engine dyno 485 horsepower, The car runs great, plenty of power, But it has a wicked idle. I really don't like the idle, may change the cam.

YEAH I AM ALWAYS AFRAID OF PUTTING IN TO BIG A CAM. MY CAR IS JUST A WEEKEND DRIVER. I LIKE THE 068 CAM A LOT BUT WANT A LITTLE MORE PERFORMANCE. I THINK THE CROWER 60916 WILL DO WHAT I WANT. I HAVE SPENT THE LAST MONTH LOOKING AT ALL THE CAMS. CLIFF R. AND JEFF AT KRE RECOMMEND THIS CAM. I THINK THEY ARE RIGHT ON THE MONEY. JEFF TOLD ME HE RUNS THAT CAM IN HIS DUALLY TOW RIG(455 PONTIAC POWERED). I BOUGHT A SET OF 1.5 ROLLER ROCKERS ALSO AND WILL TRY THEM. CAN ALWAYS GO TO 1.65 ROCKERS IF I NEED TO. WILL START CONSERVATIVE. MY CAR HAS GONE 14.25 @ 100MPH ON STREET TIRES WITH THE 068 CAM. IT SHOULD GO 13'S WITH NO PROBLEM IF I CAN HOOK IT UP.

There are some polylocks that are only 1" tall. Some of the Comps and Norris rockers have them. My HS are taller more like 1.25".

Skip, I use my old Van Dorn valve grinder to reduce their length to clear the covers. I use a fine threaded 7/16" bolt, cut the head off and then screw it into the polylock. The bolt is clamped in the fixture that holds the valve for cutting the tips. I just run it across the stone to remove the needed material. Your right, some of them are 1 1/4" long and usually hit the stock covers......Cliff
