Maybe I can attack this from a different angle. The picture I have attached has my car(top) and a sweet looking gto I downloaded(bottom). I want my car to ride similar to the car on bottom with maybe just a littlemore height in the rear. Can anybody estimate what I need?

How about new springs? Are those original? If so, replace them. If you want the rear higher, you can try springs meant for the same car, but the station wagon body style.

You could leave the rear end as it is, and cut half a coil out of the front springs.

Inch or so you can use rear coil spring spacers or coil over shocks, stay away from wagon springs too high!and air shocks ride too hard!
Nice car! good luck with it!

You could use air shocks that use the little hoses that connect to an air valve. All you do is pump air in, and the rear comes up. Costs about $60 for both shocks and about an hour to install. The kit comes with all you need. It's also available over the counter. I put some on my Cat, and it got the ride height just right. Also, the ride is quite nice as well.

Don't blame me cause your chevy broke down, you should have bought a PONTIAC!!

Stock replacement springs if you want it to look like that GTO, station wagon springs if you want it to sit too high.
Just curious, why do you want it higher than stock?

That's how I read his post. He wants it higher than stock. To each his/her own.

I just want it to look like it has a little more balls I guess. Right now it looks like grandma's grocery boat. BUT, I'm still in love with it!

I just finished up a project. It involved buying a set of the coil over springs and putting them over new shocks. It raised the car about 2 inches but wont be as harsh as air shocks.I havent driven it yet but standing and bouncing the rear there isnt alot of movement. The total cost $10.00 for springs and $24.00 for shocks is something to think about...

Dalton, I dont blame you, that is a good looking car!
If you want it to look more aggressive, I'd still use stock springs in the back, and either shorter or cut stock springs in the front to give it the rake. Mine looked almost identical to the pic of the GTO you posted, and I'll be cutting my front springs this week. Unfortunately, I wont have the entire car back together for some time, so I wont have any pics for you to look at.
Also, the higher your center of gravity, the more your handling suffers(and these cars aint exactly the best handling cars on the planet anyway!)
Good luck with whatever you decide!

You could look in the back of the Moog catalog for the specs on your stock springs (wire dia, free length and rate). Then try to find the same style spring that has a similar wire size but is taller or same free height but a little larger wire diameter. Don't do both though as you will have the ass end a mile in the air.

i would think that variable rate(cargo coil)springs would be his best bet. i never liked the look of the ass-end being lower than the front end.

I had custom coils made (local shop) for the rear of my 69 wagon. They cost $188 for both. However, they didn't raise it as I wanted. I have air shocks now, but must keep 90lbs in them to get the height I want. I am thinking of adding coil overs. Do/can they raise the car?

Your front is really close to the other cars height. Maybe an illusion but the other car has a lower profile tire with 15" wheels. Yours appears to have 14" wheels and a taller tire. The only difference I see is the rear. I think new rear springs will do the trick.

How about lower profile tires for the front as well as the new springs for the rear end? How would that look?

I can relate, I have a 65 GTO Convertible (clone) and I had the wagon springs initially, but the rear was too high for me. I have stock springs which look like the rear is dragging so i tried the cheapest solution I could find. Went to autozone and got some rubber coil spriong stabilizers, cost about 9.00 bucks. just raised rear end at frame to unweight the springs and they slipped in between the coils.Thry raised the rear about 2 1/2 inches. I put some radiator hose clamps around the coils(eight total) to keep rubber blocks from sliding around. My car looks a lot better, about level now and seems a little stiffer in the rear. might be worth a try before you go drastic. Since i just spent 900 dollars on new heads I needed a cheap fix! Now to tackle more electrical bugs.....lol.

I'm not crazy about air shocks. But, my car had them in there when I bought it, and they were actually available as an option so I've left them in there (at least for now). The ride height on my car is pretty much the same as the one you show in the picture and I have only 20 psi in the shocks. In my opinion, the ride isn't any stiffer than regular shocks, but there is a little bit of a different feel to them. For the amount you are looking to raise the car, I think you can safely and comfortably achieve what you want with air shocks. That being said, if it were me, I'd probably go the spring route. Just depends upon how much time and money you want to invest.
