I'm not there yet on my project but I wanted to throw this out for opinions/advice.
I'm not keen on the hood tachs. To me, they seem to distort the lines of the car, particularly the 400 hoods. My preference would be to find an in-dash tach, combined with the stack gauges where the clock plate is located. How rare and hard to find are these gauges? How much would you pay for these gauges (working or not). Thanks, John 1969 Firebird resto...doing my part to keep PY profitable....

John, unless you get a really big break, expect to pay anywhere from $750 for a poor condition set to $1,200 for a decent-looking set (that may or may not work). What I would pay is an entirely different question!
Another option is what a fellow first-gen list member did, but I don't think I kept his emails with the links to his photos. He used a LeMans 140MPH speedo and tach, and installed a small round Corvette fuel gauge in the Firebird clock pod. Then he created a three-gauge cluster under the dash. Certainly not the IP tach and stacked gauges, but the faces of the speedo and tach matched (the markings are different in A-body vs F-body). Glenn Uettwiller birdman@gdi.net http://firstgenfirebird.org/show/closeup.mv?CarID=209 http://firstgenfirebird.org/show/closeup.mv?CarID=210 Yes, I see your point. But maybe if you would just comb your hair a little differently... |

Einstiens right about the stacked gage prices. Why don't you go for the original dash gage/speedo cluster? Prices on ebay are 150 - 250 and you can use GTO/LeMans cluster as well. They are not too hard to hookup. You swap the #5 and 7 wire (I pretty sure of the numbers)on the standard non gage dash cluster harness and your done. One other way to go is the stealth guage setup. Using regular off the shelf guage cluster from any auto parts store, buy the electrical oil gage not the messy oil mechanical one, install with a hinge under dash and pull out gages when needed.

In the past 4 years, I've only seen one set of 69 Bird stacked gages on ebay. They went for $1200 (and included the tach/speedo cluster). This would be any great repro item.

Yeah, I haven't seen much in the way of these gauges over the last year, prompting my question.
You know, I once had a set of these that I dug out of a junkyard back in '79. I threw them away around '86 in a garage cleaning spree. Didn't realize what I had at the time. The price is steep -- I'll have to see how the rest of the project goes. Thanks for everyone's thoughts! John, take a look at these pictures. I think Frank here showed the diffierence between the 1970-71 A-body gauges and the 69 Firebird set, plus his custom in-dash tach set-up using the Le Mans set with the Corvette fuel gauge.
Sorry to hear you pitched a set of those Firebird gauges in the trash. http://community.webshots.com/user/frazel Glenn Uettwiller birdman@gdi.net http://firstgenfirebird.org/show/closeup.mv?CarID=209 http://firstgenfirebird.org/show/closeup.mv?CarID=210 You can lead a horticulture, but you can't make her think. |

The substitutes sound like a viable alternative! After looking at the URL Einstein forwarded, a quick tour of PY shows three choices:
RPI800 69 IN DASH TACH W/HARNESS No 149.00 RPI801 68 GTO IN DASH TACH W/HARN Yes 149.00 RPI802 70-72 IN DASH TACH W/HARNESS Yes 149.00 RPI801 is the only one with a picture (my main complaint about the PY online shopping!). Any opinion on Which application would be the best? And nothing even close on the stack gauges, huh? Thanks guys.... John 1969 Firebird resto...doing my part to keep PY profitable....

Since I'm getting out of the Firebirds (69 Birds), I'll tell you my best kept secret is the Stepped Gauge dashes are found mostly in the 69 OHC6 cars.
Yes, you heard right. I found 3 cars within 4 miles of home, of the stepped-gauge dash...and all had OHC6 engines...without even looking for them. H.I. Don't forget though, that those will be 5,500 redline faces and will be calibrated for the inliner. You can have the tach electronics altered (I understand it's quite simple), but the face will have to stay 5,500 redline.
Of course, you should be able to use this logic to get them for less than $250.00, right? If you guys find an extra six-cylinder set-up, keep me in mind. I did the indash-6-tach ceramic chip swap with a junky GM dashtach.
The 5500RPM redline is where it should have been for V8s.. Suppose the OHC6 69Firebirds are still around in many backyards. I'll keep you in mind. Yes, please keep me in mind. The bird I'm restoring had the original OHC6 and I'm keeping it. Could come in handy one day....

SteveK,
Yes, I saw those, but I'm looking (wishing?) for an in-dash tach with the stack gauge combo. There's a set on e-bay at http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=1872745612 But HOLY COW -- a $1,000 is too rich for my blood. Does anyone know of someone who has fabricated a set of 3rd party gauges and fitted into the clock template? Thanks, John 1969 Firebird resto...doing my part to keep PY profitable....

Holy Moly!!
A $1000 bucks and still the reserve hasn't been met!? Someones getting greedy!! I bought mine for $600 two years ago and think that was high. I'll keep my eye out for a good used set. Mine have the red line starting at about 5000-5100 RPM. Is this correct for a big block car??

A friend bought a complete dash panel in blue with an uncut radio hole out of a T/A some 6 years ago, he paid $1,400.00. I told him he was nuts then!

I see the set of stacked guages and tach on Ebay are at $1225 with reserve met. Amazing what people would pay. I guess if that is the last thing my car needed to be the way I want it, then maybe it would be worth it. I read and article that had a guy complaining because the only thing he needed on his 427 chubbelle, to make it number matching, was a proper date coded distributer. He found one but did not want to pay 200 bucks for it. A year later, he said he would have bought it cause he has not found another one anywhere. So he had a year pus whatever of aggravation for 200 bucks.
