My wife bought me a set (4) of Cragar SS wheels for Christmas 1999. I installed them in June 2000 and have driven the car (1979 10th)400 miles. The car is always garaged. The rear wheels have rusted and pitted badly. The warranty was for 1 yr from date of purchase. Maybe this is why they are not as popular as they were in the '60's and '70's, they rust so easily.

I ordered a set in June 2001, and they had to be shipped from Mexico. So I went to the local Tire Barn Warehouse and ordered trough them so there was no real commitment! The chrome was peeling and had actually not been chromed copletely on one of them! The manager laughed when I wanted to order them and warned me of the poor quality, but these were useless!

I have a set on my 72 Lemans for over a year. No rust whatsoever. The car is garaged and never gets driven in the rain.

Thanks for the heads up. That is too bad. I have been planning to get a set for my Lemans Sport conv. to use when the mood strikes me. I guess I'll stick to restoring my rally II's. Thanks again for the warning and saving me $600.
I do remember my younger days when many other wheel manufacturers made a copy of the 5 spoke Crager. Modern and Appliance come to mind. I ran Appliance rims on my GTO. I am surprised nobody makes that style aside from Crager. Torque Thrust II's are close but I like bright chrome and straight angled 5 spokes. Most of the currently popular wheels do not look particularly good on classic muscle cars. Just mho. |

Maybe they're made in the same factory where the Eagle cranks are made.

Hmmm. I was wanting to get a set of those for my '67 (or some of the original AR torque thrusts), but if they're coming out of Mexico I'm not going to go that route. Do we make any classic wheels in USA?

FWIW - I emailed Cragar last Thursday, asking the country of origin for the SS wheels themselves and the plating; so far, no response.

Thanks for the heads up.
Guess I'm gonna have to step up to the Torque Thrust II's. Or refinish them old 15x8 snowflakes. Because I have 3 cats,,,,,,and chrome don't like cat piss.

I still like them but some are just quick to tarnish or pit. I had 4 years ago and only one started to rust after a year. It obviously wasn't chromed as good as the other three. If they're brand new, I would clear coat them.
