Ok, After I installed my new dist and hooked up my MSD (6al) Box...... Here is wat I noticed.....I dont think its related but. When I turn the key my oil pressure guage goes up to 80+ psi.And After I start the car it goes all the way up on the guage.......... After I disconnect the wire to the sending unit it still does the same @ key on position but dose not rise at start up........ I think there must be a short somewhere?? The wire to the sending unit (above the oil filter) looks fine .So any thoughts or comments on where to look...Or what to check......Thanks, Mr-B

have you disconnected the battery to see where the gauge sets? If it goes back to zero psi, you most likely have a wire crossed somewhere. If it stays at 80psi I would try another gauge!!

check to see if the sending unit wire got pinched when the dist was installed. it sounds like a short to ground. mike

Ohio69 & Mike thanks. Here is what I checked so far today.........Battery disconected guage still at 80 with key and engine off......... checked and rechecked the wire to sending unit...... No apparent probs........ Put old dist back in and unhooked MSD.No difference ( Must not be MSD) hooked all that back up and re-installed New dist. This is the factory guage in the dash so maybe I'll go buy another guage and test it , Maybe It just decided to die?? I will go out there in a while with my ohm meter and do a little more testing... I am not up for pulling the dash/cluster at this time as I want/Need to drive and use the car for some FUN......I'lll keep ya posted, Mr-B

Mr. Bratt
I personally, along with meny others will only use machanical gages. More fail safe. PS One more thing, use copper tubbing not plastic. Good Luck! Tim |

UPDATE____ OK today I went and got a new sending unit. Made no difference, So I got under the dash and ended up pulling the cluster out. Just to take a look. So Its still attached though, Just enough to move it a little (I left the wires hooked up but undid the Speedo). Now When I turn the key on it goes way up over 80 and when the car starts it goes to around 40-60 range but when I rev the engine up the gauge goes down instead of up. SO any thoughts what to try now? Thanks, Mr-B

I believe you're not getting a good ground.
Is the engine block/distributor grounded good? Also the dash gauges should have a ground wire also. Make sure it's good. I think when you put the new dist. and MSD in that you have a poor ground,so the electicity is trying to find the least resistance back to ground, which is the guage wiring.

I re-checked all grounds. There are 3 straps in the engine compartment, Have good groung at the cluster and at the dash.So Now the only thing wrong is when I rev it the pressure goues down and after I let it idle and warm up it goes up. like almost 80 at an idle. Any other thoughts???? Should I just put the dash back together and order a new guage? Or let it be and put an aftermarket gauge in?? Maybe an aftermarket oil & water temp? Or oil and trans?? I'm getting a little (ok alot)
P--sed off..Mr-B

So for now I put everything back together....... And well the factory gauge shows abot 60 # at idle and goes down when reved. I hooked up another elec guage to the sending unit and just a jumper to ground and it works fine. SO I guess the factory one just died?? But why would it work backwords??? Is there any chance it's something I can fix?? Or should I just get a replacement factory unit and re pull the cluster and install??I would really like to hear some thoughts on this, Mr-B

I know your tired of hearing about grounds but I installed my 6al and MSD distributer last year and I remember being warned about grounding the 6al good.I do not remember how I did it but something to check before you go aftermarket.

I have removed the 6al and still have probs. So It must be the gauge.. After I get it all sorted out I will re insall the msd unit. Every time I hook it back up it seems like more probs occure. It is grounded fine as well as the engine.......Mr-B

OK i took the car out yesterday and had put the dash and everything back together, Checked it with another gauge that wooked fine (underhood to test ) and said ok I'll get to it some other time.Well yesterday Im going down the road and what it's working.Well, I was about and about and after about 80 miles and several stops and restarts it still works? So oh well must be gremlins???. I guess I'll just keep my fingers crossed.Mr-B
