Anybody have problems getting the starter off a 389 in a 64 lemans, I know it seems strange but I can get the bolts out and it unhooked but I cant move it away from the bellhousing enough without it hitting the frame and I cant move it forward enough to drop down without it hitting the bellhousing? Do I have to jack up the engine and take it off the motor mounts or what?
Weird problem isnt it |

I don't recall for sure, but I think you have to disconnect the exhaust. The starter goes out nose up. There is a notch in the frame to allow it to go above the frame. Again, at least that is what I remember.

Yes, that is weird, I have 3 64's & just replaced the starter in my daily driver '64 LeMans w/'72 350. Mine comes right out, no interference whatsoever. Like OMT said, is the exhaust in the way??, you might have to drop the headpipe. Good Luck. Guy

The exhaust doesnt seem to be in the way its just that that the crossmember and the bellhousing interfere, I mean I only lack a 1/16 of an inch. Anybody ever experience this problem, I have a hot start problem so bad that I have to park on a hill everywhere I go because the guy that had it before me put a 2bbl 326 starter on it. I am about to the point of buying a mini starter and busting the nose off the old one with a hammer to get it out. Any suggestions?

Dude, you really have to disconnect the headpipe from the exhaust manifold there. My motor is a 66 389 & it's definitely a tight squeeze but it drops thru. I put on a heat-shield to help with hot-start problems, which are caused by being so close to the exhaust! If you do that, put the starter in 1st & wire it up- then put on the heat shield, then reconnect the manifold & pipe.
