I was hoping to get some info on the YS engine that came with my car. They thought it was from a 69 GTO, but not sure.
0644903
YS
is stamped on the front pass. side of the block,
On the back, same side, is 979007. Behind the distributer is 0319.
Heads are stamped 62.
Does this help figure out what it is??
I would like to rebuild it for my car, but dont want to waiste my time rebuilding a slug engine. Are the heads the good ones??

That YS code is right for an Automatic GTO 400 350 HP
The code on the back of the valve cover should be a 9790071.
Built in March 1969
1969 heads. 2.11/1.77

She's a good one.....keep it.

Is there a way to know what the compression ratio is for that engine...it is disassembled. I was thinking about sending the heads to Butler, and putting their stroker 467 kit in it. But if I can just rebuild it back to stock and get 350 hp I may just do that.

Check out this site: http://www.gtoalley.com/engcodens.html

I was thinking that the 0 in 0319 may be a D for April and the 9 is for 1969 however there aren't 31 in April, hmmmm.

Should be 10.75:1 stock with the 62 heads although I've heard that the actual compressions were really lower than the specs. Perhaps someone else could elaborate on that

Wonder if that date code is a C
If the last number is a 9 it's a 69 for sure because the cast on 70's was a 9799914/5

Im pretty sure the number is right, it was very ledgeble. I will check it in the morning. The plan is to buy the 467 stroker kit from Butler, and have them do my heads. Add an Edelbrock RPM intake, 850 Holly, and a recurved distributer from him, (he said I would need dished pistons and he would help me pick a cam for whatever I was going to do with the car). I am kind of wondering now if it would be smarter to just get the Edelbrock heads. I have read lots of posts on the subject, and it seems most are regretting not just getting them to start with. I am not building a drag car, just a real stout weekend warrior. Not sure what the others were doing with there cars. Any advice?? Also , would it be smarter to use a non GTO block just in case? It is not the original engine to my 70' Judge, but I would still hate to blow a big hole in the side of a good engine (God forbid it should happen).

I believe the compression on the stock 1969 YS 400 350 HP engine was 10:75-1.
