Hello everyone,

I have a question regarding a wire I need to identify in my 68 LeMans (this is my first project car). It is coming through the firewall near the fuse box; it is not connected to anything, so I assume I probably knocked it out somehow. The car has not moved since last fall, when the battery died. I have recharged the battery, but it does not turn over at all, it just clicks. Should this wire be attached to the fuse box somewhere, or is this a ground wire? (photo links are following) Also, the motor is from a 79 Chevy; I was wondering if anyone could tell me if this is the original fuse box, or if it is from the Chevy. Thanks again for any help.

The fuse box appears to be the original. What does the wire lead to on the firewall side?

it sounds like the classic my starer died syndrome. have a friend crawl under the car and when you turn the key to start have him tap the starter with a hammer. if the engine turns over the starter needs brushes or has one sticking.
btw; your pic wouldn't load. mike

The fuse box looks original, but that wire doesn't. It looks like someone has done some creative wiring along the way. The wire looks to me like someone has poked a hole in one of the fasteners that hold the firewall insulation in place to run a wire to some sort of accessory in the engine compartment. It may even be a ground wire that was added and no longer used. I think the best thing to do would be to locate the wire in the engine compartment and follow it to see where it goes. Also, if you have a multi-meter, you may want to check the wire for 12 volts, first with the key off and with it on. That may save you from a bit of fireworks if it is hot.
I hope this helps.

Just wanted to sat thanks for the posts regarding the wire. It's good to know this is not a standard wire. I'll try to track it down on the engine side.
