I'm thinking about trying to replace the stock 69 rear with a disc brake rear. Has anyone tried this before ? Would like to know what doner car to start with. Any thoughts ?

The easiest thing to do is buy a JL8 factory disc brake rear end from a 69 Camaro. Bolts right in... the problem being that the rear end runs about $10,000...YES that is the correct number of Zeros in there.

I believe you can use a rear from a second gen. F-body. You need the get the first gen. spring perches welded onto it. Take measurements to be sure...but I thought I read that this had been done before.

The 2nd gen rear disc setup is CRAP, though! It uses an emergency-brake activated, ratchet adjustment systment system. It was quite common to have on caliper lock under light pedal, while the other wouldn't lock at all. If you didn't regularly use the e-brake, and FULLY activate it when you did, your rear brakes would get less and less effective as the pads wore.
Go with one of the aftermarket kits that offers modern calipers that adjust properly.

On ebay there is a company that sells a bolt on bracket for your 10/12 bolt.
Then you buy rotors (rear) for a 1980 Firebird Then you buy rear calipers from Caddilac Seviles Do some searches on this site and you will find this setup. The guy that sells the mounts sells complete kits for $499. |

Check out the new Musclecar Enthusiast Magazine that just came out. They have a feature story on installing rear disc brakes on a 69 Trans Am clone.
