I'm ready to order paint for the seat backs and arm rests on my gold 69 LM. But - the original color coating has oxidized or turned scaly such that it scrapes off easily to the bare plastic. It appears to be a coating of texturizing material. I know I need to strip this down to smooth plastic so the new paint will stick, but how do I get the texture correct? Are the interior paints sold in the resto catalogues sufficient or is some other preparation required?
All tips gladly accepted!

The texture is part of the plastic panel , not the paint . Wash the panels with soap and water . Then wipe them down with lacquer thinner . You can also use a scuff pad for sanding the panels .

yep, your backs are dry rotting, and i would suggest you get a new set of backs rather than painting them. you may be able to find a decent set on ebay or something but i think you can get them new also. Im not sure how its gona look if you scrape off all the grain on yours and paint it and with all the trouble of cleaning and painting and the possibility of it not looking good after i would consider new ones, they have them listed in PY but not sure if they have colors, but OPG lists many colors available.
Hope this helps.

Geez, I didn't know plastic could rot. Then again, I did have some 15-yr old ski boots shatter like eggshells a few years ago. I guess the plastics back in '69 were primitive by today's standards. Maybe that's why the cars were mostly steel back then!

I dont know about the plastics being primitive, but lets see how all these new cars look in 33 years of sun baking. My first 70 gto had red interior and the seat sides and backs were faded and the grain would scrape off with my nail, same thing thats happening to you. I went with black interior and got some decent used panels off a nasty pair of cutlass buckets i got from a swap meet for 5 bucks that have a few scratches but arent rotting(a little fire will take the fuzz off of most scratches )
anyways, im babbling. Good luck with your project!
