69'Lemans,455 w/68#16heads,IMI mini-starter,wrapped in heat shield, headers, dual batteries in trunk(one for starter, one for MSD 6-AL)starts on the first hit,but once it hits the 180-200 degree range, it won't start.Cranks well for a bit, but doesn't hit.All engine and battery grounds are good, ignition hook ups are good, starter and ignition switches are Moroso, using Ford remote solenoid on firewall.Using MSD pro billet distributor and Blaster II coil. With the replaced HEI, had the same start problem and noticed old HEI was put in a cylinder off. I installed new MSD by the books problem went away until last time at the track. Car runs consistant 12.0's w/1.58 1.63 60'foots.Help!at my wits end.

What size is the wire from the battery in the trunk? I've found that #2 is too small. Try running 2/0 or bigger welding cable from front to back. If wire is too small you will get a voltage drop and the starter won't crank very well. Sounds like the problem to me.

I had a very similar problem with my 64 Tempest racecar project. Since I had some issues with the MSD billet distributor anyway, I took it to a distributor shop. He found three problems. The weights were hitting the inside of the rotor, the curve did not match what they said it would with the parts I used, AND the magnetic pickup was intermittent. I bought one for an '80 Ford truck (at Autotronics suggestion). I had to modify everything except the pickup itself, but it seems to work OK now. I don't know how I would have diagnosed it if it had not acted up on the distributor machine. My symptoms were also hot start. On the distributor machine it was cold start. When the failure manifested itself, the distributor had to be spun to an effective RPM of 3000 to work.
