I have a '66 tempest w/ factory power steering. Are there any power steering upgrades out there? Has anyone ever used one or made there own? Does someone make a kit? Thanks, Kevin.

A close ratio gearbox will definetaly increase response.
Take a look at this site.
I don't think you will be able to beat what they have to offer.

Yep, I upgraded my '72 to the fast-ratio offered by Power Steering Svcs.

I can't say enough positive things about the whole experience. Relatively cheap, easy, professional folks, and boy does it work!

My '72 probably had a faster ratio than your car anyway, but I went from 3.5+ turns lock-to-lock to just less than 3 turns. Much nicer feel out on the road. Much less of that big barge feeling. I didn't have to replace my pump, hoses or anything. I did replace my hoses due to age, but fit-wise, I wouldn't have had to.

You can send your box to be upgraded, or you can buy a ready-to-go box outright and get a core refund when you ship yours back. I went this latter route because I wasn't concerned about #'s matching. They also have two levels of finish - basic grey or concours-correct plating. Again, I went with the basic finish on my daily driver.

Good luck. E-mail me if you need any other details.

Kirk
