Anyone know what yr axles are "direct replacement" for a '72 Lemans? I don't want it to be wider or have to alter anything. It has the crappy Olds "O" diff in it now (12 bolt cover;10 bolt ring gear)& 2.78 I believe.Want to eventually go to 3.55 posi.

I had put an original 10 bolt posi from a 68 Lemans into my 72 GTO, direct fit, no mods necessary.

BTW, mine also had the crappy Olds diff in it before swapping it with 68 Pontiac unit..

A 71 or 72 8.5 A body rear has many parts available for it, were used from 71 until 87 and are strong. Not to mention the 71 72 8.5 rears have bolt in axles unlike the newer c clip ones. I have one I am putting together to go into my 70 gto right now that came out of a 71 cutlass I think. I got a 8.5 posi carrier from the junkyard, some new clutches from gm, and just need to get it all assembled. I think the driveshaft will need to be like a little over an inch shorter with the 8.5 rear though.

can i see a pic of what a 72 lemans diff looks like, i know its a 10 bolt, bus is it strong, i also have a 12 bolt, but is it worth selling the 12 bolt, as in the 8.5 being strong enough for a bbc?

68 - 72 A-body direct bolt in. Pontiac, Buick, Olds, Chebby. If you look in any B.O.P. cars for a 12 bolt be sure it is the Chebby style they are stronger. They will have what looks something like an upside down V high on the cover. You may need to buy a new U-joint some have a different yoke, or if you have a Pontiac yoke you can put that on.
In Olds you will mostly find the good style rear in 68 & 69 cars. If you plan on racing the car the best thing to do is run a bead of weld around the axle tube where it is pressed into the differential. That will help keep the tube from twisting. A lot of racers do it around here. Here is a pic of the Chebby style cover. The pic is upside down.
