I have a 1965 GTO with factory air. My mechanic says that the compressor and clutch are working, but it does not blow cold. I have had conflicting advice from mechanics on how to recharge it. Some say that the old Freon is the only way to go (I was surprised that it was still available). Others said to convert to the new coolant (R-132?). Someone told me that the new coolant has molecules so small that they would leak out of my old system rapidly. Someone else said that any coolant I use would leak out after one season with the old hoses (expensive with the cost of Freon). Anyone who has recharged their systems successively? I need advice. Thanks, George F.

George,

Welcome to the Forums.

I recommend that you replace the old hoses with the new "barrier" type 134 hoses and use crimp collars in place of the factory style hose clamps. Then charge your newly sealed a/c system with R-12, which will produce lower discharge temps than a 134 conversion of the factory system.

As in many decisions, "pay me now or pay me later" applies in this case.

If your system is low it has a leak. I dont know how much it is going to cost to recharge the system (I do my own) but if it leaks right out you wasted your money. Most of those old compressors leaked from the front seal but you could have a leak anywhere.

i am a little confused. if your compressor and clutch are working this should mean you have at least enough freon charge to operate compressor. i would have someone reclaim your freon and check the amount. if it is close to specs it should cool some. your problem could be expansion valve or other component. if charge is low i would agree with wheelspin and install new hoses and recharge with r12. also i would have them install uv dye so that any leaks can be detected and repaired. good luck
