I have a '66 Tempest convertible that I would like to replace the dashpad. To replace it, I understand that I will need to removed the face of the dash to give me better access to the fastners which hold the pad to the dashboard. How do I remove the headlamp knob, and windshield washer knob, as it appears that these must be removed to pull the dash face out of the dashboard.

The knobs themselves pull right off , with a little pressure . If you want to remove the switches , unscrew the bezels or remove the nut behind the knob (it's been a while , can't remember which one )

The light switch knob can be removed by pulling while you hold a little spring button on the left side of the light switch,
and then you can remove the bezel on the front by unscrewing the retaining nut it has 2 groves in it. As for the wiper switch pulls out and then remove the bezel nut.

I'm in the middle of redbuilding the heating and A/C ducting and controls on my '67 Tempest Sport Coupe and I've removed the dash pad and instruments from my car to get better access. You don't really need to remove the instrument panel to remove the dash pad. There are 5 trim screws up under the dash overhang and these serve two functions: to hold up the upper half of the instrument panel and to hold down the dash pad. What you will have to remove is the glove box as there are two trim retaining nuts hidden up and behind that portion of the dash....they are above the "Tempest" trim panel that runs across that section of the dash. You might find that the 5 nylon screw retainers under the instrument panel side are cacked/stipped/broken.... replacements can be bought (thru Performance Years? and Ames). Hope this helps.
