Hello all,

Does anyone have pictures or diagrams of the water pump and plates? I am new to all of this as I have just purchased a 64 tempest with a 68 tempest 350 in it. I know little about cars so I figured this had to be the place to come [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif[/img]

Right now there is no fan shroud on the radiator and the car gets to 220 degrees while sitting in the garage. Would the shroud make that much of a difference? I am checking the water pump because the engine sat for 11 years [img]/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif[/img]

Welcome!
PY sells the divider plates you need. You should be able to get a rebuilt W/P from any auto parts store for a decent price.
The fan shroud and a 160* t-stat should get your temps back in line.
You can find pictures of the assembly in a Pontiac service manual or a Chiltons, etc.

Ryan,
The 64-68 water pump housing had 2 plates inside. It is critical that they are not really rusted. This will cause the water to get around the plates and not cool properly.
Also check the housing for rot that will allow water to bypass the plates. Check the waterpump. Make sure that it has a cast impeller that the blades go to the center. DO NOT use any one with a stamped steel impeller!! You may have to check several pumps untill you get a good one. It would be in your best interest to powerflush your cooling system. Have your radiator rotted out. If it is in poor shape. Replace it with a new 4-row. Buy the repro fan shroud.
It will make a big difference.

Well it turns out that the water pump is in great condition. No rust anywhere in sight.

One thing that seemed odd to me is there were 2 gaskets stacked on each other. Is that the way it should be? And does anyone have some part numbers of the gasket so I can get them at a local auto shop?
