I have used a number of Summit Cam & Lifter Kits over the years in a variety of engines. I have noticed the K2801 has shown up in a lot of 455 buildups on this site.
Who has used this camshaft in a 400 and what were your thoughts on its performance? I ran this cam through Desktop Dyno with 6X heads (1.77 Ex) 9.25:1 compression with stock intake & exhaust manifolds. It made an impressive 300 HP @ 4500 and 400 TQ @ 3000 rpm. I realize this is considered by many to be a 'little' camshaft. However, this seems to be about all the camshaft I can use and still squeak by my California Smog Check. Anyone driving it on the street that could comment on its seat-of-the-pants feel??? Thanks...Robert |

I have no experience with this cam yet, but I am planning on installing it in my tripower 389 w/stock 1965 #77 heads in a month. From what I can gather after some research, this cam is like a higher lift version of the pontiac original 068. It responds well to high compression and will have some small lope in a 389/400. I do think a 4spd and/or some gears of at least 3.23 is needed to ensure good low end torque. I don't think most would consider this a 'little cam'. In a 455 is probably is a bit on the small side and would generate tremendous low end torque. in a 400, I think it would be a great cam provided you have some gears or stall.

i have this same cam in my well worn 389. 67 gto. performer manifold, 600 holley, th400 2.96 rear, 26" tires. runs well, good throttle response. i don't have the headers on yet so it's not very loud. standing behind the car it sound like a high performance stocker. with my worn out engine it runs about 12" vacuum. lets not talk about fuel mileage. i wear heavy shoes! have fun with it.

go to pontiacwarriors.com theres a dyno with a pontiac 350 w/ 2801 cam, good combo. i originally thought about that cam, wasnt sure how it would have matched the heads on my base 350?so i went with the 2800. I dont know how diff they really compare on dynos.

Thanks for the replies. Crane has a version that spec's out at .454" .480" - 218° / 228° 112° C/L that looks very good.
It made impressive torque and horsepower on Desktop Dyno...Robert |

Do you have a part # for that cam? I went through the entire Pontiac section of the Crane website, and couldn't find it. It does sound like it might be an interesting piece. <a href="http://kurtspontiac.homestead.com/MikeChampion64GTOConv.html"</a> |

I don't have my spec books in front of me, but the Summit cams are repackaged Wolverine Blue Racer cams. I called Wolverine and they confirmed it.
I have used the 214/[email protected]" cam in 400s and 455s. It works well with both, has a mild rumble. It is a torque monster in a 455. I wouldn't use the 224/[email protected]" cam in a 400 with low compression. I typically run Wolverine cams in my daily drivers. I ran a 73 Formula 400 and a 75 Formula 400 with the milder cam. One had in excess of 150K on it when I sold it, and the other had about 120K miles. They are very reliable cam. I used adjustable rocker nuts and set them at zero lash plus 3/4 turn after run-in, and never touched them again. Mike |

Last year I had the 2801 in my '65 389 +.40 with '68 #16 heads street clean-up (like a 400), '65 tripower, repro RA exh manifolds with 2.5 exhaust and DynoMax. The cam idled in my 389 like a 068 - it sounds basically stock with a hint of lope. Nice off-idle and strong mid-range, with my combination it was done before 6k. Plenty of vacuum for my power brakes. I was able to set the idle at spec warm but with my alum flywheel it was much happier to drive around town at 750-800. I think this one should pass smog for you, and you may be able to go bigger but always hard to say for sure.... Good luck

This cam does have slight lope to it at idle in my 400. Im going to try my 670 heads on it thi year. Hoping to get car into the 13s. There not kidding about torque in a 455 either, cause I had this cam in my 455 for a year, in a 83 GP with 6X-4 and and the same intake set up as the 400 and 2.73 gears and it ran 12.97@104mph with lots of wheel spin in second gear.
