Big Bubba - I seem to recall that the factory service manual for the 79 TA with the 400 engine had a procedure for replacing the rope seal with the engine still in the car. I don't know how this differs from your car but it may be worth looking into if you really don't want to pull the engine. Good luck!

I have heard that the rope seal is not very efective any more. Something about the rope seal NOT having asbestos, and wearing out and leaking.

You should go with one of the newer rubber seals. And it is best to remove the engine to replace the seal.

...best if used on or before date indicated...

I am in the process of doing this on my 462. Here's the deal. In the old days you could do this in the car because you were replacing the rope seal. Those rope seals had asbestos. Today's rope seals do not have asbestos since that's been outlawed. They have fiberglass and are useless. They leak within a 1000 miles of install. Most folks are using a neopreme seal in the motors now. The best one, by consensus, is the BOP seal. The install procedure will require you to pull the engine since you have to remove the crank to get this seal in place (on 3 inch jounal motors).

Everyone is correct... you WILL need to pull the engine out. I currently am having this done with the newer poly seal and the engine HAS to come out.

Bite the bullet and good luck!

The Viton 3 in. RMS I purchased from BOP Engineering came with instructions to replace the seal "in chassis"

They note NOT to use these instructions on the 3 1/4 RMS.

I just did the seal "in chassis" in my 65 with a 389. The work went well but the results didn't.

Not sure why it leaks,I'll search out some opinions in another topic.

Yea' you can replace the rope seal w/ the engine in the car; if you David Copperfield!
Don't f*ck around, do it right the first time w/ the viton seal & pull the engine.
