I've read through some of the past threads, but I'd like to get specific.
First of all, I am not taking the whole car down to the metal. I am replaceing all of the rust areas which are:
1. New Tail Panel
2. New Trunk floor
3. Patch the Door drain areas (about a 6" x 2" area on the driver underside and 4 x 2 on the passenger side.)
4. New deck lid
5. Some rust repair on the front lip of the hood.
6. Left front fender behind the wheel (about 6" x 6"
7. Front window gutter.

This car was repainted around 6 years ago.
There is good filler work on the rear quarters that I do not want to redo. Front fenders, Roof, and doors look fine. I just want to remove the second coat of paint in the large areas where there is no metal exposure due to rust repair. I will have the the person/company that does the final paint do the primer/filler and block the car out

I have decided to use Dupont paint for my Goat. I went down to a paint supply shop that sells Dupont and talked to a very knowledgable guy. He sugested Using Dupont "VariPrime 615S" to cover my exposed metal surfaces.
I will be applying this to my metal exposed areas only, taking care not to get it on the Evercoat "Metal to Metal" filler I have been using. The Paint shop guy told me not to put this primer over the filler but not to worry if I get a little on the edges of the filler making sure that the "VariPrime" covers all of the metal.
I paid about $60 for a quart of this primer with the activater.

Now for some questions for the paint guys on this forum:
1. Is this "VariPrime" known to be an excellent product?
2. If I get some of it on the evercoat "metal to metal" will it lift? or damage the filler?
3. What is the best(toughest, chip resistant) primer and paint? Urethane? Acrylic Enamel?

I want to stick with Dupont. Anyone here have experience with the Dupont systems? Any recomendations?

Thanks again to all.

Haven't used Dupont for a few years..
(about 10)
Last time I used their Products..
The base was awfully transparent..
But the Clear was some of the sweetest looking and spraying I ever used..
If the vari prime is a 2k primer/ filler.
then lifting the filler shouldn't be an issue..
If it's an etching primer, then you don't want that on anything but bare metal

As far as tough paint..
The way I used to show my customers how tough Spies Hecker was...
I'd throw my pocket full of keys at my old van I painted with it..
then challenged them to find any chips or scratches in it..
though I did find out it can be scratched, when a neighbor girl decided to write her name in the side of my van with a rock.

Dupont is a good product, not my choice of paints, but used correctly will provide satisfactory results.
The most durable paint system you can use is any single stage urethane clearcoated. You get a catalized system from the ground up and it is almost bulletproof, in a manner of speaking.
If you go with a basecoat clearcoat system, make sure you get the mixing ratio that includes hardener in the base. All OEM manufactors require a hardener in the base for all warranty repairs. Adds to the durability of the product. All paint companies have a reccomendation for this.
If you decide to stay with Dupont, make sure you stay with Chroma Premier b/c. It has a ratio with hardener and should do fine for you. Just order a little extra, Marty is correct, it doesn't cover as well as some of the others, ex: Sikkens AB+, spies, etc.

Good Luck

Oh yes, and 615 Variprime is a self etching primer. Designed for adhesion and rust prevention for bare metal. It shouldn't hurt the Metal filler you have used, just try to stay on bare steel areas. Let it flash for a good 30 minutes before you apply the primer surfacer. It's a good product.

What is the maximum amout if time I can wait after I apply the VariPrime, to apply the Primer filler. Any timing issues there?

the vari prime's an excellent product for adhesion.

i think, if you read the side of the can, it'll tell you what the pot life is. don't leave this in the gun like the old laquer primers. if you do you'll probably need a new gun.

the chromabase paint from dupont is a good paint but i'll agree with the above comments.

I will probably be spraying the VariPrime to protect the metal and it may be 3 months or so before Primer/filler and sealer is sprayed over it. Is this O.K.? Would it need to be sanded?

Yes, that's actually a good idea if your not planning on applying the surfacer right away. It only takes 8 hours for flash rust to start on bare steel, so the best option is to put an etch primer to protect it.
Just scuff with 320 grit paper or a red scuff pad, and reapply in case you have any thin areas. Don't forget to wait the 30 minutes before applying the surfacer.

Oh and one more thing, this is an acid based product, MAKE SURE YOU HAVE PROPER VENTILATION AND IF YOU HAVE ACCESS TO A FRESH AIR SYSTEM FOR BREATHING, USE IT!
A regular respirator won't protect you well enough. If you do use one, make sure it is new and you have good air flow and ventilation.

Marty,i noticed you mentioned in a post above about etching primer. I primed my car with some build primer and sanded it down. While sanding i feathered down to some bare metal. I sprayed some etching primer on the bare metal spots and some went onto the build primer as i did not mask off around every little piece of bare metal i broke through to.Is this going to be a problem when i go to paint (which should be real soon)? Do i need to go over the etching primer with an epoxy primer now and resand and hope i don't break through to the metal again? Thanks for your time

I have a lot of pits from rust that I spent a lot of time cleaning up. I went to the paint shop the other day and told them I used all-metal by USC and they told me to just spray the 615 over the bare metal and the All-Metal filler. They said it would be fine and I should fill first, lay down the 615 and then spray some URO 1104S Primer-Filler over that. This Dupont Primer-Filler can be reduced to also be used as a sealer.

Variprime 615 Tech Sheet says 2 medium coats with a flash until dull (about 5 min) between coats. Flash for priming/Sealing is 30-45 minutes. Maximum allowable drying time 24 hrs and after that you will have to sand.
