My rear coils do not look like this. I have an even coil spacing. I thought they made statebay coilsion wagon coils like this?

i think those are "cargo" coil springs.

Variable rate coils. light rate unloaded, stiffer when loaded.

I noticed that they were variable rate. I guess my question is this. Were these offered as an option in 1967? Thanks for the info.

I have a 1967 station wagon (Tempest) with what I believe are the original springs on it. They are not the variable rate springs, just straight coils. I don't if that was an option, however.

For what it's worth, I just bought a set of springs for that wagon from ESPO. I was able to get the variable rate spring and specify higher or lower than stock. Pair Rear springs, 1" lower than stock, $70. Stock $60. Pair Front, 1.75 lower than stock $90 Stock $85.
And this is 1" lower, as installed on the car, so you're not trying to figure out...If I cut 1" off, does that drop me 1" or 2" or 1.5" or...

HEY TEEJ,
Can I get a set of those variable rate springs for the rear of a 72 LeMans Sport w/400 and th350? I'd like to get them about 2" taller than stock and get rid of the air shocks. Also, will they lift the back end up a bit? |

I'm also getting rid of the original air shocks on that wagon, went with KYB. (I wanted Bilstein, but didn't have the $$$) I'm sure they can hook you up with the right springs. Check out WWW.ESPO.COM or call them at 1-800-903-9019. They had the springs I wanted in stock, got them yesterday. All four ran about $180 with tax and shipping.

the variable rate springs were not oem units. they came out in the 70's as a solution to more load capacity and a smoother ride when empty.
the espo pricing sounds comparable to coil spring specialties. when you measure for the lower or lift be sure you measure the amout you want to raise or lower the car from the STOCK RIDE HIEGHT AT THE STOCK MEASURING POINT. mike

Hey Mike,
As far as the stock height, I'm not sure what that is for a 72 LeMans Sport. I have 275/60r15's at the rear. I'm looking for the coils to help lift it enough for the quarter to clear the top of the tire. Can you help me with this distance? |

a service manual will have the hieght and measure points in it. also moog put out some chassis manuals that provided this info.
i don't have it here in fron of me and my wife has boxed the magority of my manuals up when my office got commandeered for the twins room. what you'll need to do is get the stock hieght, then measure where you want the car to sit. the difference is what you'll want to add or subtract from oem ride height. when raising or lowering a car be sure to verify driveshaft clearance and ujoint angles also. mike

I was originally going to go with Coil Spring Specialties, but the quote they sent me was $250 + shipping. And I actually wanted the variable rate springs. I know it's not OEM, but I think it made sense for my wagon.

that's about 50% more than i paid for my 68 gto springs [4] with a custom hieght and rate, shipped to my door.
